Why is backloading it a bad idea?

because the player is being paid the most when he is likely to be playing the worst, making him that much more impossible to trade

but at the same time yearly escalating salaries will minimize this effect.

Marquis has 2 years and $16.2M left on his deal. It would seem that trading him would free up some necessary cash to get the additional bat (RF or SS) we need to improve this club. There does seem to be some indication that Hendry is contemplating moving him.

What indication would that be?

Marquis, Dempster, Ohman to Reds for Griffey, Alex Gonzalez/Keppinger.

Deferred financial payments to Griffey settled between the clubs.

I think the Reds would want a couple more middle relief pitchers to make the deal work.

If we can't sign Fukodome to play RF, how about Marquis and Jones for Brian Giles?

Salaries are a near wash for 2008. The $9M Marquis makes in 2009 would replace the salary the Pads are paying Greg Maddux in 2008 (Maddog has a player option for $8.75M in 2008).

Away stats for Giles in 2007: .299 .374 .496 .870 (ave obp slg ops).

Considering in 07 JM had a 4.60 ERA, 12 wins and is durable I doubt it'd be very difficult to move him.

Not really, other teams are smarter and know he's worse than that.

Not all of them.

And he isn't that bad, he just isn't great. There are enough teams desparate for pitching that would take him.

Most are, but not every team. Remember Pit's lovely trading deadline move for Morris? I'm sure Hendry could find a couple teams with serious interest.

Crasnick implies the Cubs are listening to offers.

"Even if the Cubs don't trade Prior, there have been some rumblings that they're listening on Jason Marquis. After a strong start last season, Marquis posted an unsightly 5.73 ERA after the All-Star break. The Cubs owe him $16.25 million over the next two years, and he didn't exactly ingratiate himself with manager Lou Piniella with his performance down the stretch."

What is the consensus as to who will be the weak link in the rotation between Dempster or Marquis? In the current market Marquis at 2/14MM is not a bad deal.

$16.25/2.
