Wow, I didn't notice that. Thomas added a walk to the day's work, his up to date line is .300/.373/.500/.873, with 7/12 BB/K in 67 PA's, and 12 SB with 0 CS. Unfortunately he committed errors 2 and 3 this evening as well.

Soto Hit His 18th Homer

By Andrea Breen / Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs managed just five hits, but were able to defeat the Tucson Sidewinders 3-1 Friday night at Principal Park.

Geovany Soto gave Iowa an early lead with a solo home run in the first inning. It was Soto's 18th homer of the year. Tucson tied the game in the third inning on an Alberto Callaspo sacrifice fly.

The Cubs took advantage of an error by Sidewinder right fielder Alex Romero in the fourth inning. Buck Coats singled to left field to advance Jake Fox to third. Romero's throw to third bounced into the dugout, allowing Fox to score, giving the Cubs a 2-1 lead.

John Nelson's seventh inning pinch-hit double scored Matt Craig to add the Cubs' final tally.

Sean Gallagher picked up his third win for Iowa throwing seven innings and allowing only one run on five hits. Bill Murphy took the loss for Tucson.

SmokiesBaseball.com"]Late game heroics fall short for Smokies in 6-5 loss

Sevierville, TN – A couple of timely hits by Montgomery, as well as a controversial foul ball call cost the Tennessee Smokies tonight as they fell to the Biscuits by a score of 6-5. Smokies starting pitcher Donnie Veal pitched four strong innings, but ran into trouble in the fifth and sixth innings, giving up six runs in two innings. With the loss, the Smokies dropped to 22-20 for the 2nd half of the season in front of 4,636 disappointed fans.

Montgomery got the scoring going early tonight, thanks to a leadoff triple off the bat of Fernando Perez that right fielder Issmael Salas had trouble locating. With Perez on third, Brooks Baddeaux grounded weakly to shortstop Robinson Chirinos, who chose to get the force out at first rather than risk the throw home. Veal worked his way out of the rest of the inning, but Montgomery had a 1-0 lead.

Veal was sharp through four innings of work, but ran into more trouble from the Biscuits in the top of the fifth inning. Gabriel Martinez singled to lead off the inning off Veal, and then scored on a towering home run by Rhyne Hughes to give the Biscuits a 3-0 lead. The situation became bleaker when the Biscuits plated three more runs off of Veal in the sixth inning to take an apparently commanding 6-0 lead.

The Smokies would not quit however, and stormed back into the game in the bottom half of the sixth. With the bases loaded and one out in the inning, Robinson Chirinos and Nate Spears walked in runs in consecutive at bats to cut the lead to 6-2. In what proved to be the pivotal play of the game, Alan Rick ripped a hard line drive down the first base line for what appeared to be a potential bases clearing double. First base umpire Doug Levy called the ball foul while jumping out of the balls path, and all the runners were sent back, much to the ire of Smokies manager Pat Listach. Rick then hit a sacrifice fly to deep left field to score Jorge Cortes to pull the Smokies to within 6-3.

Tennessee continued to mount a comeback against the Biscuits, but were unable to take advantage of their opportunities. The Smokies scored a run in the eighth inning, but were unable to capitalize more with bases loaded and one out. Issmael Salas crushed a home run to deep left field in the bottom of the ninth, his sixth of the season, with nobody out to pull the Smokies to 6-5. That would be all the offense could muster however.

Donnie Veal (6-9) suffered the loss for the Smokies, despite retiring 12 of 13 batters to begin the game. James Houser (5-4) picked up the win for Montgomery, with Dale Thayer notching his 20th save of the season.

DaytonaCubs.com"]Big Flies Propel Daytona to 8-6 Triumph

Carter, Mota Strong in Victory Over Jupiter

By: Dan Watson

[DAYTONA BEACH, FL] The Daytona Cubs muscled up and used the long ball to top the Jupiter Hammerheads, 8-6, Friday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Yusuf Carter homered and drove in five runs, and Jonathan Mota hit his second career round-tripper to push the Cubs to the victory.

Greg Reinhard notched his third win of the year for Daytona to move to 3-2. The right-hander went five innings, gave up three runs on six hits, walked one and struck out four.

Ryan Harvey kept it rolling for the Cubs. A night after clubbing a grand slam, the former first-round pick went 3-for-4 with three singles.

Jupiter jumped ahead in the top of the first with a two-out rally. Angel Molina hit a fly ball to left-center that fell between two Daytona outfielders to plate Chris Coglan and Andrew Jenkins to make it a 2-0 Hammerheads lead.

The Cubs tied the game in the bottom of the second with the help of Jupiter mistakes. Matt Matulia reached on an error to lead off the inning, and two batters later Billy Mottram singled to put runners at the corners. Mottram moved to second on a wild pitch, and both runners scored when Yusuf Carter's ground ball was booted by the second baseman.

Carter gave Daytona the lead in the bottom of the fourth. After Ryan Harvey singled and Mottram walked, Carter belted an 0-1 pitch from lefty Aaron Thompson over the wall in left to push the Cubs into a 5-2 lead.

The Hammerheads retook some momentum in the fifth. Lorenzo Scott, Trent D'Antonio and Kris Harvey strung together consecutive singles, and Coglan lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to plate Scott and cut the lead to 5-3.

Jonathan Mota padded the Daytona lead in the top of the eighth. After Jeffrey Rea legged out an infield single, Mota blasted the first pitch he saw for a two-run home run to put the Cubs up, 7-3. Mota's second career home run spelled the end of the night for Thompson.

Jupiter tightened things up in the eighth. Harvey led off the frame with a triple and an RBI single by Coglan made it a 7-4 game. After a walk to Andrew Jenkins, reliever Scott Taylor was lifted from the game with nobody out and two on. Downs struck out the first batter he faced, but two batters later surrendered a two-run single to John Purdom, cutting the lead to 7-6. The Daytona lefty struck out the next two batters to end the inning with the lead intact.

The Cubs extended the advantage in the eighth. Matulia drew a leadoff walk and Harvey singled. Mottram bunted the runners over, and Carter's RBI groundout against reliever Benito Beato made it 8-6. Daytona loaded the bases later in the frame, but couldn't push more runs across.

Thompson (2-5) took the loss for the Hammerheads. Tim Layden worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to pick up his ninth save of the year.

PeoriaChiefs.com"]Chiefs Snap Losing Streak With 6-2 Win

Lansing, MI – Five Peoria Chiefs pitchers combined a weird two-hitter as the offense provided early support in a 6-2 win over the Lansing Lugnuts Friday night. The Chiefs improve to 24-16 on the half and stay in the top playoff spot in the standings despite walking 10 batters on the night.

With two outs in the first inning the Chiefs jumped on Lansing starter Nate Starner. Jim Adduci clubbed his second homer of the season out onto Cedar Street down the right field line for a 1-0 lead. Derek Schermerhorn followed with a double to left and scored on a double off the bat of Russ Canzler. Wellington Castillo made it 3-0 with a single to right but was thrown out at second to end the inning after Canzler scored.

Peoria starter Jose Pina got through a perfect first inning before walking the first three batters he faced in the second. After the third walk, Pina grabbed his right elbow and left the game. Left-hander Chris Siegfried came on with the bases loaded and nobody out. He struck out Matt Lane and then got a fielders choice for the second out. A two-out bases loaded walk to Jonathan Diaz but the Lugnuts on the board before the Chiefs got out of the inning.

With one out in the third, Siegfried walked three straight batters to load the bases again. This time, the Chiefs got out of the jam unscathed with a lineout and flyout to end the inning.

Peoria knocked Starter out of the game in the fifth inning. Nate Samson led off with a hustle double and scored on a Leon Johnson single for a 4-1 lead. Johnson moved to second on an error and scored when Darwin Barney tripled to deep left.

Jayson Ruhlman relieved Siegfried in the fourth and retired the first seven batters he faced before walking Yuber Rodriguez with one out in the sixth. After a strikeout of Matt Lane, Jonathan Baksh doubled into left-center for the Lugnuts first hit of the game. Rodriguez scored on the play to cut the Chiefs lead to 5-2 before Ruhlman retired Scott Campbell and end the inning.

Peoria scored their final run in the eighth inning against the Lugnuts bullpen. Barney led off with a single and went to third on a one-out hit by Schermerhorn. Lansing intentionally walked Canzler before Castillo popped out to second. Ronald Lowe relieved Adam Rogers and walked Clark Hardman to force in a run.

Pina walked three and struck out one while allowing one run in one inning of work. Siegfried struck out one and walked four in two hitless innings. Ruhlman (5-1) picks up the win while striking out a career high six batters. The lefty gave up one run and two hits over three innings. Jose Ceda struck out four and walked one in his two hitless innings while Alex Maestri struck out three and walked one in the ninth.

Gorman’s Pub Player of the Game: Jayson Ruhlman (LHP) – Ruhlman set a new career high with six strikeouts in three innings of work. He allowed two hits, one walk and one run while picking up the win.

[b[]Notes…Peoria’s last one-hitter took four pitchers on May 1, 2005 as Sean Gallagher, Walt Nolen, Paul Schappert and Jerry Blevins beat Kane County 1-0 at O’Brien Field...

BoiseHawks.com"]Hawks Come From Behind to Beat Eugene, 11-7

The Boise Hawks came from five runs down to beat the Eugene Emeralds Friday night, 11-7. Eugene scored five runs in the first inning when they sent all nine batters to the plate. But after the Hawks scored one in the bottom of the first, they batted around in the third to score five of their own to take the lead. Boise added two more in the fifth inning, and one in each of the seventh and eighth innings to secure the victory.

Tony Thomas led the offensive surge for the Hawks. The second baseman had three hits, drove in a pair of runs, walked twice, stole four bases and scored three times. Marquez Smith drove in two runs with a pair of hits and two walks and Ty Wright had three hits and his team-leading 34th RBI.

Jordan Latham got his first win with three innings of relief allowing one unearned run and Audi Santana finished the final two innings giving up an unearned run. The Hawks did commit four errors, but on this night, their bats were able to overcome.
