Link to the thread, Truffle?

nah i'm not doing that... i don't think the mods want us giving links to rub erroneous evaluations in the faces of long-time posters. But it's not hard to go back and find the old threads, if you want to read through some of them.

I wish they would. It would make people think twice before posting hyperbolic stuff. But hey, that's just me. I'm all about accountability.

I get the feeling that Lilly is the sort of pitcher who will age well; a Jamie Moyer type. Recall that the light bulb didn't come on for Moyer until he was in his 30's.

And who was that general manager that signed Lilly? Just providing some appropriate defense here for our much maligned and cyber-lynched Jim Hendry, who, by the way, signed two or three other pretty good players this year (yes, I know that were expensive)

I wasn't a huge fan of Lilly's contract(and I was a big proponent of getting Schmidt), but I underestimated him as a pitcher, even if he does regress from his current performance.

I also wanted Schmidt and argued that Schmidt and Lilly/Wolf (rather than Lilly and Marquis) was the direction to go. Happy to be wrong.

Please do not derail my Lilly Love with talk of Mr. Jones. Rather, please start a "Mr. Jones and Me" thread.

And BTW, while Marquis hasn't been nearly as good as Lilly, has has been surprisingly decent and a worthy fifth starter, IMO.

Indeed.

The thread that really needs bumping is the Marquis one.

A distinct minority felt there was actually a pretty good chance that the guy would make for a real solid #5 starter. Those thoughts were drowned out by wave after wave of laughter and venom. Lo and behold, Marquis has been... a real solid #5 starter.

Marquis 2007 = Jones 2006.

(Let's hope Marquis 2008 /= Jones 2007.) ;)

Lilly is having the best sustained success that he's ever had and has gotten great run support. He's pitched about as well as Rich Hill (thanks Jon for the data) who some have called inconsistent or worse.

I don't think I was for or against the Lilly signing, but all the gloating in this thread is ridicilous.

I gotta say I wasn't hip on the DeRosa deal either and I was dead wrong. He and Lilly have been great signings...

I was pretty neutral on the signing. I figured Lilly would at leats be solid in terms of staying healthy and not totally crapping the bed, plus I assumed there were still bigger pitcher signings to come and I was sadly focused on seeing if Prior or Miller or Guzman could pull off a miracle. In the back of my mind I hoped that getting free of the brutal AL East would help him really sharpen out there, but I really didn't expect this. Very nice surprise.

On the DeRosa issue, I recall complete laughter and downright stupid name calling against Hendry for signing him. Turns out he's pretty damn versatile and not a half bad hitter either.

I'm not so sure about that. Lilly looks to be getting stronger as the season wears on. He's 5-0 with a 1.84 era in July. Lilly deserves the gloating he's getting.

You think this is bad? Man, check out the Rich Hill thread...this isn't even in the same universe.

And as for Hill, I think a lot of the perception about his year being more negative than Lilly's is a lot of us assumed or hoped he would be much better than Lilly. Lilly has also gotten to his numbers by either staying consistent or getting better whereas it can be argued Rich has gotten to where he is by kind of slipping over his last 5-7 starts (I'm not sure how many exactly, though the last one ended very well). And before the Hill devotees gnash at my throat, I'M NOT TRYING TO BASH HILL. "Awesome Hill" is a joy to watch and I'm hoping he can start climbing towards that level again. That said, I'll be perfectly happy with "Good Hill," too.

You tottaly and utterly missed the point.

How? You said the "gloating" in this thread is ridiculous, and I replied that I think in comparison to a lot of other similar threads, Hill's key among them, this one isn't bad at all.

I then replied to how (as I read it) you were pointing out how some people have really gotten on Hill over the last month despite his numbers being almost the same as Lilly's. What did I do or get wrong?

Sorry to have wasted your time.
