C Josh Donaldson (supp 1st rounder) from Mesa to Boise

RHP Oscar Bernard from Peoria to Boise

LHP Casey Lambert (6th rounder) from Boise to Peoria

IF Derek Schermerhorn (UDFA) from Boise to Peoria

RHP Michael Bartek (UDFA) from Mesa to Peoria

http://www.idahostatesman.com/sports/story/97313.html

Boise now has 3 catchers on the roster (and it figures that Clevenger and Mercedes are two of their best hitters):

First, Donaldson will hone his skills behind the plate with the Hawks. He will share time with teammates Steven Clevenger and Mario Mercedes, Monday's starter.

Hawks manager Tom Beyers said Donaldson is expected to play twice every three games.

I really can't see the sense of having 3 catchers at Boise. One of them will probably DH when not behind the plate. Or prehaps the experiment with Clevenger isn't working...or prehaps the Cubs do not have as high as hopes for Mercedes as I do. But most likely someone will be moved to Peoria.

Good to see he's at least this far. I was hoping he'd be low A worthy by the end of this season. If he can be in Daytona in 2008, AA in 2009, then there's a chance we could have the future franchise catcher up in the majors by 2010, at age 24.

I don't know what's up with Mercedes. His bat alone deserves to be in Peoria and ahead of Welington Castillo (to be fair, Castillo has held his own at Peoria). On top of it all, Castillo has struggled on defense so I'd think Mercedes is a better defensive catcher too.

The Cubs obviously think more of Castillo than Mercedes. Also, Nathan said that the Cubs gave him the top two prospects (pitcher and hitter) to look for on the Chiefs team and Welington Castillo was the hitter.

I think it was the phrase "future franchise catcher" that got him.

Oh. Well, I'm not saying the guy is, I'm saying there's a chance he could be. That doesn't mean he'll ever be an all star or anything, just that he might be a guy who comes up and provides relatively inexpensive catching services for 6-7 years without being a weight on the team. I would hope a 1st round comp pick would have a chance to be that guy.

He'll fit perfectly with our infield of Kelton, Montanez, Hill, and Choi! Heh, I'm just kidding around - you have to admit your post is reminiscent of newbie posts!

Remember, one of the worst seasons for Boise was the year that they had Marshall, Hill, and Cherry as starters. The name of the game is not winning seasons, but developing prospects. I am really getting anxious to see Boise in action, but they do not swing by Salem until the middle of August.
