IowaCubs.com"]Redbirds Drop Cubs 4-1

By Jeff Lantz / http://www.iowacubs.com

The Memphis Redbirds scored three runs in the last three innings to top the Iowa Cubs 4-1 Friday night at Principal Park.

The Cubs took an early lead on a RBI double by Daryle Ward in the first inning, but Memphis outfielder Rick Ankiel's 16th home run of the season tied the game in the fourth inning.

The Redbirds scored in the seventh to break the tie on a RBI single by Brendan Ryan. Memphis added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth inning on a two-run single by Brian Esposito to take a 4-1 lead.

The Cubs managed just six hits off Memphis pitching on the evening, with Eric Patterson and Ronny Cedeno each recording a pair of hits.

Memphis starter Randy Keisler picked up the win and improved to 4-4 on the year. Brian Falkenborg notched the save for the Redbirds.

Iowa starter Ryan O'Malley was tagged with the loss despite allowing just two runs over 6.2 innings of work.

SmokiesBaseball.com"]Smokies drop a tough one, 4-2

Sevierville, TN – After taking the first two games of the series against the visiting West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx, the Tennessee Smokies dropped game three in rough fashion 4-2 on Friday night in front of 4,946 eager fans. The loss dropped the Smokies to 35-31 on the season, and waiting on the results of game two between the Huntsville Stars and Birmingham Barons to see where they stand in the North Division. With the Stars losing game one, the Smokies still stood within ½ game of first place with two to play in the first half.

West Tennessee got to Smokies starting pitcher Mark Holliman (6-5) in the top of the third inning. After Sebastian Boucher bunted his way on base, Charlton Jimerson crushed a triple into the right field gap to bring him home. Prentice Redman followed with a single to score Jimerson, and the Smokies were suddenly down 2-0.

The Smokies certainly had their chances in the evening, but just could not bring in the runs tonight. They stranded nine runners through the first eight innings, including the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh. What really cost the Smokies tonight were errors. Tennessee committed four team errors in the contest, one of which led to a run in the 6th inning for West Tennessee to stake them to a 3-0 lead.

With the score 4-0 in the bottom of the eighth, Tennessee finally made their move. Josh Kroeger walked to open the inning, which brought up Matt Craig. Craig deposited his fifth home run of the season to pull the Smokies to within two runs. The Smokies would get no closer however, as the West Tennessee bullpen retired the next six batters in order to end the game.

Robert Rohrbaugh (7-4) picked up the win for the Diamond Jaxx, with David Asher notching his first save with West Tennessee. Holliman took the loss for the Smokies, but still pitched six innings, giving up three runs while striking out two.

Clearwater Slugger Bombs Away, Wins Derby

By: Dan Watson

[DAYTONA BEACH, FL] On a night in which the best of the Florida State League showcased their skills, Clearwater's Jeremy Slayden was the star of the show. Slayden outslugged seven other All-Stars to win the Palmer Chiropractic Clinic Home Run Derby at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Slayden topped Palm Beach's Mark Hamilton, 5-2, in the final round.

Slayden worked his way into a groove as the night went on, advancing in the first round of the derby with just two home runs. The left-handed hitter drilled eight out of the park in Round Two, the best round by any hitter all night. Hamilton advanced to the finals only after a playoff against Palm Beach teammate Allen Craig.

The night started with an autograph session where fans packed the Riverwalk and picnic areas to get items signed.

The on-field festivities hit the ground running. Literally. The first skills competition was the Fastest Man competition, where contestants sprinted from first base to home. Lakeland Flying Tiger Cameron Maybin scorched the field with the only time under ten seconds (9.98). St. Lucie's Dustin Martin clocked in at 10.07, good for second place.

The Outfield Arms competition was taken by a hometown Daytona Cub, Jesus Valdez. The competition forced players to throw from various outfield spots to home plate. Valdez topped the rest of the contestants with a perfect throw on the first try from left field, and no one else could match it.

Jupiter's Andrew Jenkins took top honors in the Catcher's Arms competition, despite admitting he hadn't caught in a game in roughly a month. In the battle of the backstops, catchers tried to hit a target for one point or put the ball into a net for three points. In three throws, Jenkins chalked up seven points. Vero Beach's Christian Lopez was just behind with four points.

The Bat Skills competition pitted some of the best situational hitters in the FSL against each other, as they tried to lay down a bunt to specific area and then hit grounders toward targets smattered across the field. The final hitter, Sarasota infielder Mike Griffin, saved the best for last. On the last swing of the contest, Griffin nailed a sign placed in center field to give himself the victory. By hitting the sign, Griffin also netted a fan $500. The fan, wearing Cubs gear, suddenly became a Sarasota Reds fan.

The FanFest wrapped up with a fireworks show and post-game party on the Riverwalk area.

Florida State League All-Star Weekend continues Saturday with the FSL All-Star Game set for a 7:05pm first pitch. Daytona's Mitch Atkins will be the starting pitcher for the Eastern Division.

ugh, rick ankiel homers for memphis. He now has 9 HRs more than Edmonds. I really think he might be a better hitter at this point

I was at the game last night, he just missed a second one and I think he hit that one better than the HR.
