way to go charlie

Being from Philly, I can tell you that Howard Eskin is a prick - but that being said, it is true that attacks on Charlie Manuel have been related to game management and the Phillies underachieving, and have not been personal in nature.

Manuel is a pretty lousy manager, and I'll be surprised if he makes it to the all-star break. That Phillies team should be able to contend for the division, or at the very least for the wild card.

The way I heard this story, on the radio, the reporter asked Manuel why he didn't 'get angry like Lou Piniella.' LOL, if that's the case, I think his blowup is understandable. That's a ridiculous question to ask a manager. His demeanor shouldn't be openly compared to another manager's... According to what I heard, Manuel asked the guy into his office where a shouting match ensued.

so the reporter thinks the team is too lax -- much like the Cubs were under Dusty Baker, with no accountability -- and the manager takes the guy into his office, berates him and then challenges him to a fight? Yeah that's really handling the situation like a professional.

I think the guy was asking for trouble. The article mentioned that he is a talk show host and longtime "critic" of Manuel... It isn't fair to compare him to another manager in a postgame show (especially following a tough loss). The guy is in there to ask questions and record responses not to tell him how to motivate his players. He's talking like a fan which is uncalled for and unprofessional. A beat writer could never get away with such behavior. It sounds like typical sports radio nonsense. I'm sure he has enough on-air material to last a month.

The blow-up started during the postgame news conference when Eskin suggested that Manuel throw a clubhouse tirade to shake up his stumbling team.

It's very unprofessional of Manual, but similar to other blow-ups, by guys like Piniella.

Obviously Eskin was looking for trouble since Manuel told him to come to his office to fight, and he apparantly showed. I'm sure Eskin acted in as smug and condescending manner as possible to get the greatest rise out of him.

It's fair to ask a guy whether his players are unmotivated when they have lousy fundamentals and seem lackadasical. The team didn't know there were 3 outs in the sixth inning of last night's game, and had to be waved off the field by the umpires.

Hopefully for the sake of my friends who are Phillies fans, Manuel will be fired and they'll bring in a replacement who is actually competent.

There's a difference between posing a question and telling him what he should do (throw a tirade to motivate players).
