I was thinking about Prior/Wood and how far back that might have set back the Cubs as a franchise, but what is our long term future?

Do the Cubs have enough quality prospects for the long haul, or is the organization barren of any quality talent?

They could have the best farm system in all of baseball and I still wound't get my hopes up....just like they spent 300 Mil this offseason and still can't score any damn runs.

Best case scenario....perfect time travel and go back and never let yourself become a fan.

Since no one felt like giving a real serious answer, rather failed attempts at sarcasm (save Mephistopheles), I'll fill you in on some info:

As Mephistopheles correctly said, our farm system is ranked in the middle of the pack by Baseball America and I would assume other talent ranking systems. On the pitching side, our top prospects include

*Sean Gallagher; AA Tennessee; 3.38 ERA, 9K, 2BB in 2007

*Donald Veal; AA Tennessee; 9.39 ERA, 5K, 10BB

Hitters

*Felix Pie; OF; AAA Iowa; .440/.483/.600

*Eric Patterson; 2B; AAA Iowa; .286/.333/.321

*Tyler Colvin; OF; A Daytona; .429/.429/.786

For more info I would check in with the Minor League forum, Baseball America, or Baseball Prospectus

Which is why my daughters first game will be at Miller Park to see the Brewers. My wife thinks I'm crazy b/c I will not allow any Cubs clothes be given to our new born.

When I have kids, they will be smothered in Cubs gear. I already made my girlfriend into a Cubs fan. If I'm going down, I'm bringing everybody with me.

Our farm system should take a big jump this June though, barring we don't Cub that pick up. But yeah, I don't get too excited about most of our prospects. I think Gallagher will be a good pitcher, Veal worries me because of his bouts of control. Pie is Corey Patterson all over again, except, imo, doesn't have the same upside that Corey did. Besides that I need to see more from the Shark.

You're right -- Felix will be much better.

He may end up being better, but Corey isn't that bad a big league player. Sure his OBP sucks, but I think Felix will have that same flaw as well.

The minors are average right now, but there are some raw players at the lower levels of the farm system right now that have very high potential. Combine that with a few high picks this draft and I think the foundation is there for a jump back into the top 10 next season.

But there's a lot of other factors to the future health of the franchise than the players we currently have in the system. Having Wilken on board gives promise to the future flow of good players into the system. Having money on the major league side of things helps a lot.

But as long as Hendry is pulling the strings, I think our chances to win are less than what they could be given the other resources at the team's disposal.

I would have to agree with everything that you said there.

That's a horrible thing to do to your child.

The Brewers aren't exactly the model of a successful franchise. At least make them Yankees fans!

Sure and give him a pack of cigs on his 3rd birthday too. The Yankees are evil.
