This happened over a month ago, but I don't think it was mentioned at the time; I just read about it today in the April issue of Vine Line. Former Cub catcher Gene Oliver died at 71 of complications from lung surgery. The majority of his playing career was with the Cards and Braves, but he appeared in a total of 31 games for the Cubs during 1968 and 1969 at the end of his career. I believe he was a regular participant at the Cubs Convention. It always surprised me that he identified with the Cubs so much since his time with the Cubs was such a small part of his major league career.

well, he grew up a huge cub fan in the quad cities. he attended my high school (Alleman, woot) and was apparently friendly with some members of my family, getting cubs convention tickets for them on a couple of occassions.

he'll be missed.

please ignore this shameless attempt to gain acceptance, though.
