If Barry Zito pitches unremarkably this season, does it effect Carlos Zambrano's contract? If GMs around the game think Sabean might have crippled his team long-term with the Zito signing, wouldn't they be less likely to mirror risking that mistake with Zambrano?

 

Such a possibility might make it more desirable for Z to quickly sign a contract with the Cubs.

I wouldn't think so. Zito's contract was a reflection of the high-priced market for starting pitching, not the driver of it. Zambrano will get well-paid (hopefully from the Cubs) regardless of Zito's performance.
