Dan Johnson will begin the season on the disabled list after being diagnosed with torn cartilage in his left hip.

The A's will have a better idea this weekend, but he might miss as much as three months. It a tough break for Johnson, who had finished strong this spring and was about to become Oakland's first baseman against right-handers. Now it seems likely that Erubiel Durazo will get the nod, though his poor defense is going to be a problem. The A's will likely see what's available in trade, and because they can move Nick Swisher, they could pick up an outfielder instead of a first baseman.
