Ken Rosenthal[/url]"]Free-agent right-hander Miguel Batista is on the verge of signing a three-year contract with the Seattle Mariners, FOXSports.com has learned.

The deal is pending a physical.

The Royals have been told that Batista will sign with another club, major-league sources say, and it is believed that the Cardinals also have been eliminated from the bidding.

The Mariners, Royals and Cardinals were believed to be the three finalists for Batista, though the Rangers and Mets are among the other clubs that have shown interest.

The Royals made Batista a three-year, $24 million offer. The winning bid figures to be higher.

So at least 3 years and $24 million for Batista? The contracts just keep getting worse and worse.

This is about plan D for the Cards, and they missed out again. I've seen rumors that they're talking to the Yankees about Pavano and still have interest in bringing back Suppan, but Suppan's contract demands might be too high.

I'm really wondering what Jocketty will do next. He's missed out on quite a few pitchers and they need 2 starting pitchers to fill out their rotation. They can't be serious about putting Looper into the rotation. The Cardinals have been lying in the weeds so far this offseason, and I'm really interested in what they're going to do.

I'd assume at some point they have to bite the bullet and fork over some cash. Pavano is a insteresting option if healthy. They are a very creative team, I'm sure they'll figure out something. I'm also curious to see what Houston does....

I'm less worried about Houston than I am about St. Louis. Jocketty has shown over and over again that he's an excellent GM. He's very creative and gets the most out of the budget he's given. Luckily the Cardinals farm system isn't very good right now so they don't have that many trading chips.

Good, hopefully this gets the Cardinals to finally give in and give Suppan more money. Cause if they dont resign Suppan there rotation is gonna be awful. It wont be great with him but at least he will eat some innings.
