Tigers sign Jose Mesa 1yr/2.5M

ESPN is reporting that Jose Mesa and the Tigers have agreed to a one-year, $2.5 million contract.

 

This is unexpected. The Tigers were already supposed to have five locks for the pen in Todd Jones, Fernando Rodney, Joel Zumaya, Jason Grilli and Wilfredo Ledezma. Also, they still want to add a second lefty. If they do that, Zach Miner, Jordan Tata, Chad Durbin, Roman Colon and Rule-5 pick Edward Campsuano are all going to be on the outside looking in come spring training.

My guess is that they're trying to trade Jones, will put Zumaya in at closer (I would put him in the rotation, but whatever) and want Mesa as insurance in case Zumaya isn't able to handle closing.

 

Either that or they're insane b/c I don't know why you'd need 4 back of the pen RH's (Jones, Rodney, Zumaya, Mesa).

You put Zumaya in the rotation? Are ya nuts? His value to the Tigers would diminished, and with Bonderman/Verlander/Miller/Robertson/Rogers already in the rotation and "rumor" to have a rotation, there is no room for Zoom in the rotation. Besides, Zoom has more value to the Tigers at the back end of the staff, not the front end.
