The White Sox have a surplus of starters (and wants to move one of them to move McCarthy into the rotation), and the Cubs have enough decent spare parts to make a trade happen. How about:

 

 

Cubs get: Freddy Garcia (or Vazquez)

White Sox get: Scott Linebrink

Padres get: Jacques Jones/Rule 5 prospect like Fontenot or Fox

 

Cubs get a starter, the Padres address their hole in LF, and the White Sox opens up a spot in the rotation for McCarthy, and recieves some solid bullpen help. I understand a prospect here and there to even out the trade, but that is the jist. Not a rumor, just me thinking out loud.

from what was said on sports central yesterday, the sox will want WAY more than that for either vasquez or garcia. apparently at this point williams is asking quite alot for any of his starters.

Can't blame him, given what the mediocre FA starters are getting paid.

May want, and will get are two different animals. Everybody knows he wants to move one of his starters, and get McCarthy into the rotation, so Williams can't get picky. Besides, Linebrink, and maybe a solid prospect would be enough of a return for Garcia or Vazquez.

It's going to take a truckload to get starting pitching in this market. That sucks b/c it doesn't look like FA is going to satisfactorily fill our rotation.
