I live in Peoria myself, and I'm THRILLED!!!

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Ryne Sandberg apparently is serious about being a manager.

Sandberg was named Tuesday as the manager for the Cubs' Class A Peoria Chiefs. Sandberg follows his former Cubs teammate Jody Davis, who managed the Chiefs for one season and was assigned to the Class A Daytona team for 2007.

Sandberg was a late candidate for the Cubs' vacancy and interviewed with general manager Jim Hendry after the team decided not to renew Dusty Baker's contract. Hendry told the Hall of Fame second baseman that he was looking for someone with more managing experience, and the Cubs named Lou Piniella in October.

At that time, Sandberg said he had been considering getting back into baseball.

"It's something I've been thinking about quite a bit," he told the Chicago Sun-Times in October. "I'm at a stage in my life where that is something I want to do."
