This is from Ken Rosenthal's column.

If the Cubs would take on all or close to all of the salary owed to Hudson over the next 2yrs., could the Cubs get him for a reasonable price of players? Schuerholz seems to love stock piling relief pitchers, so could a deal centered around Dempster and a prospect or 2 make sense? Due to the dollars the Cubs would be absorbing, I would suspect Hendry would want a prospect to come back the Cubs way as well.

Hudson has pitched over 200 innings only once in the last 3yrs. and his overall #'s were not good last yr., but he is a solid #2 pitcher at 31yrs. old. The concern is that his agent will want an extension (I believe he has a limited no-trade clause) before he accepts a deal. He matches up well with Schmidt and is 2-3yrs. younger.

Hudson is not very good and is not likely to improve. He'd have to come pretty cheap in terms of talent given up for me to really be interested. His numbers last year were fairly ugly.

Honestly I havent seen enough of him in the past to know if he can turn it around.Tthe few times I watched him last year though he was really bad. I just dont like the idea of getting a guy that gave up almost 5 runs per 9 innings last year. Not to be paying him 13 million a year.

I'd take Hudson if I could get M. Giles too (DeRosa platoons with Jones in RF, Soriano to CF).

I do like the idea of getting Giles even though I think DeRosa will be productive.

I dug this up on rotowire:

Atlanta has talked to Baltimore about a trade that would send Hudson to the Orioles for a package of prospects that would include Hayden Penn

The guy has one off season and all of sudden he isn't very good?

sheesh.

ERA+:

2003: 158

2004: 133

2005: 125

2006: 92

WHIP:

2003: 1.08

2004: 1.26

2005: 1.35

2006: 1.44

Also look at BB/K and BB/9... the trends aren't particularly encouraging.

sheesh.

ONE offseason?

I say he's had two in a row. He got lucky to have an ERA in the 3.00s in 2005 with that 1.35 WHIP.

He had an ERA+ of 91. I forgot just how bad he was last year. But he's "only" 31, and there aren't many pitchers out there who the Cubs are looking at that don't have a 91 ERA+ type season on their resume. Tim does have a 128 for his career. He's had a better career than anybody the Cubs have considered, even Schmidt. I think it might be a good risk to take, although I'd have to have a thorough physical exam to be sure.

The trends are bad, but the fact is he's had only one bad season. Schmidt had a similar 2005. Just about every pitcher the Cubs are reportedly looking at has had similar seasons. And none of them has had the career of Hudson.

My point in comparing Hudson to Schmidt was that they both have had what some would call down years in the past 3yrs. Hudson is 3yrs. younger and if he's physically sound, than he has a better chance of having a better overall performance than Schmidt does over the next 2-3yrs.

It all then comes down to the package of players going both ways. Schueholz seems to be a GM that comes out of nowhere and makes a big offseason move, so I wouldn't be surprised to hear a bigger deal made, but if the focus can remain on the one main need--top of the rotation starting pitching-- than I say the Cubs should go for it.

The A's sure seem to know when the time is right to cut bait. Everyone just assumes it's for salary reasons alone, but they sure look prescient in hindsight regarding both Mulder and Hudson. I would at least think about that for a moment were I the Mets and about to throw megabucks at Barry Zito.

You have a point: Hudson's ERA + from 2001-2006.

129, 156, 158, 133, 125, 91.

Schmidt's ERA + from 2001-2006.

103, 110, 183, 139, 94, 125

Both have one season below average. Schmidt has one phenomenally great season, but Hudson has two excellent seasons as well. Hudson appears to be more consistent.

The scary part about Hudson is his dip is his most recent season while Schmidt has shown he could bounce back from his poor season. Hudson has been in decline over the last four years, but if he can bounce back to the 120-130 ERA+ level, he'll likely be as valuable as Schmidt.

I'd be very willing to take a chance on Hudson.

If the deal is Dempster and two mid-level prospects for Hudson, I really do not see a downside. Would you rather have Meche or Padilla at ridiculous salaries?
Posted

If the cost is Dempster and the prospects do not include Pie or a selection of true minor league pitchers (Paw, Veal, Gallagher, Sam) then this is a no-brainer IMO.

Ideally Atalanta would want some of the more MLB ready "prospects" (or at least AAA) the Cubs schowcased last year, such as Marshall, Mateo, Guzman, etc.

My guess is the Braves would ask for Pie in any deal, but would likely back off that. Pie would have value for the Braves since they will likely lose Jones to free agency next year.

While I wouldn't give up Pie in a deal for Hudson, if Jones were included in the deal, I'd be happy to trade Felix.
