What I dont get is.. He says its not about the money.. so why the 5th-biggest contract in the MLB?

Its my belief that in a lot of cases the agent is more interested in the money than what is best for his client. Case in point scott boras and pretty much any deal he does. A lot of the players seem far removed from the dealing that goes on. A week ago when soriano took his physical a guy asked him if he got his no trade clause and he didn't even know. You would think that would one of the first questions that he'd ask his agent. Its just like real estate the agent drive ups the prices to get the most for his 2.5-5%. Plus you have teams bidding against each other. I'm fine though with guys like Alfonso getting the money its better than letting the owners keep it all.

That's what the Cubs offered him. Even if he is a player who absolutely does not care about money, no one is going to turn that down.

If it's not about the money, then what is it about? I would assume it's about winning----in which case, much as it hurts me to say it, the Cubs would not be the place to come.

I don't want to rain on the parade too much, because I like the signing and everything, but it's clear that it IS about the money. And I have a hard time believing Soriano doesn't realize he's about to drop quite a few games if the Cubs don't acquire some pitching. It's a 90+ loss ballclub that hasn't addressed its glaring pitching problems. He knew this coming in.

I'm surprised no one asked him if he'd be playing winter ball.

Maybe they were told ahead of time that it was off-limits.

In the press conference article on Cubs.com, it says Hendry announced that he asked Soriano not to play and that he agreed. I'm pretty sure there are plenty of people in the organization above Hendry who also didn't want to see Soriano playing any winter ball either.

I was just thinking about this situation, and my thought is why the hell not? with certain conditions of course.

condition 1 - his time is equally spent in center and right and at no other positions

condition 2 - no stolen bases. perhaps even suggest only solid singles and HRs are allowed (just kidding on this one)

condition 3 - a scale is created so any injury reduces salary or years.

if he's injured, screw it. your fanbase is resilient enough. scrap 2007 in a crappy FA market and look toward the future. deal off pieces, paying future salaries if you need to and rebuild from scratch with Z, Aram, and Lee as the core for the next three years. see how Murton does in full time duty. see if some of this young pitching pans out. then add the impact FAs when their prices are more reasonable or at least the talent pool is a little deeper.
