Interesting. GM Dave Littlefield only said yesterday that Marte's $3 million option for 2007 had been picked up. "We picked up the option, then negotiated another contract that supersedes [the option]," he said today. The Pirates also had Marte under control for $3 million in 2008. Perhaps by guaranteeing that season now, they're saving themselves a little money over the two years.
