Gil Meche-S- Mariners Nov. 15 - 2:45 pm et

With Ted Lilly likely on the way out, the Jays held discussions with the agents for free agents Gil Meche, Randy Wolf and Vicente Padilla on Tuesday.

The Cubs and Yankees are a couple of tbe big spenders potentially targeting Meche. Wolf may be a more realistic possibility for the Jays if they don't want to spend $8 million per season or more. Padilla will definitely go for more than that.

Don't forget (if no one has pointed this out) that he would be moving to the NL from the AL....that should help his walk rates a bit, and his overall ERA

But he's going from Safeco to Wrigley and the AL West (Seattle, Oakland and Anaheim are pitcher's parks) to the NL Central.

He's a good guy to take a risk on. He has good stuff. But his price tag is going to be pretty expensive - I'd at least take a look at Schmidt first and fail at going after him before moving to the Meche tier of FA pitchers.

I haven't looked at numbers, but isn't Safeco regarded as a pitcher's park? And I also don't really see a whole lot of difference in talent level between the AL west and the NL central outside of the DH being there. The Angels and A's have both struggled offensively the last 2 years. Aside from Meche possibly figuring it out under Rothschild, I don't see a lot of reason for optimism, especially since he averaged less than 6 IP/start last year with a nearly 1.5 whip.

Yeah, that was my point...Safeco Field, McAfee Coliseum and Angel Stadium are pitcher's parks (Ballpark in Arlington obviously isn't). The NL Central doesn't have the luxury of the pitcher's parks and Wrigley certainly isn't as friendly as Safeco is to a pitcher.

Well, I guess we can always hope the Yanks outbid the Cubs for Yeche.

Maybe we shouldn't even consider Meche. His away numbers from last year:

15HR 5.14ERA 1.60WHIP .275 AVG

His numbers from 2005 away and home are similar to his away stats from last year.

I got excited after Soriano. Hendry had us fooled. He hasn't changed. This is typical Hendry.

You do realize that report about Meche was written over 2 weeks ago, don't you? This was before the Soriano signing.

I mean I got excited that we'd be getting great players after we signed Soriano. Meche is not what I had in mind.

I know, but nothing has been reported that the Cubs are the favorites to sign Meche since then. That rumor is not nearly as strong as it was 2 weeks ago. It is possible the Cubs end up with Meche, but I don't see anything recently that would call it likely right now.

Geezus, Gil freaking Meche? If you're going to shoot that low, why not just sign Jason Marquis, he'll be cheaper, sign for less years, and you can use him as an extra PH off the bench. :-)

Also, unlike Meche, I believe Marquis at least has a track record of posting an ERA+ over 100 in his career at least one time.

Still, either option makes me ill. C'mon Hendry, if you're going for the gusto, put your money into someone with some SEMBLANCE of talent and performance.

We haven't offered a contract to Schmidt, yet Hendry is falling all over himself to get Meche?

I really want to kick Jim in the head.

Where is any recent report that says that Hendry is going hard after Meche? The only thing I see is a report dated November 15th-that was a long time ago.

It's hilarious how people aren't noticing that this thread is two weeks old and that they've already complained about this godawful potential signing (which isn't being discussed nearly as much anymore) in this very thread.

If it makes you feel any better, I've thought a Gil Meche signing would be horrible for years.

And thank goodness for good news but it feels like a stay of execution.

Given a choice between signing Meche and Marquis, all other things being equal and if someone put a gun to my head to make me decide, I'd ... I'd ... well, I'd take .. ok, just pull the damn trigger and put me out of my misery.

Haha WOW I didn't read the date on the thread. My bad. I feel a lot better now.
