Clifton also represents free agent outfielder Luis Gonzalez, believed to be leaning heavily toward signing a one-year deal with the Cardinals shortly after the market opens.

Gonzalez, 39, has told associates he would prefer to play in St. Louis. He also made inquiries about the organization while serving as an analyst for Fox during the postseason.

Sure beats him coming to the Cubs. :D

Apparently the Cardinals are going to try to become the Giants of the midwest.

Both teams finished decently above the roster-full-of-rookies Cubs.

well, to be fair, the Cubs weren't supposed to have a lot of those guys playing for them this year.

I'm just saying, it may be fun to scout rookies and hope they succeed in the big leagues...but I think a lot of that is ego stroking. "I" called this player, "I" said so and so would be great, "I" have been following his stats since whenever....a winning ballclub has veterans, usually at a higher ratio to rookies. Fact.

Who has said otherwise? You just brought this argument in out of nowhere.

It's also a terrible idea to assemble a team full of players in their late 30's who are well past their prime. Fact.

I count two players if Gonzalez is signed on the wrong side of 35 on the Cards; Edmonds is the other. They're hardly the Giants. While I wouldn't be shouting from rooftops, Gonzo isn't the worst guy I can think of to sign for a one year stop gap deal. I'm not deluding myself to think the Cards will sign one of the "top" free agent OFs. This could mean one of three things for the Cards: they'd be looking to move Encarnacion, their focus is on starting pitching where it should be, or they're not going to hamstring themselves for years to come with a bad signing.

LF - Gonzo LH

hmm...

So, do you think Encarncion is on the bench?

There are rumblings he's out the door because he's fallen out of favor with management. The fact that he didn't even show up to the WS celebration speaks volumes.

Does he have much trade value?

He hit 278/317/443 last year. The OBP is bad, while the average is respectable. His OPS+ was 94 which is really bad for a corner OF. He still has 2 years and 11.5 million left on the contract. My guess is the Cardinals may have to eat some of that to move him.

Yep, I suspect they're willing to do that. We shall see, this is a crazy time for rumors.
