Will Carroll: Mets discussing Heilman to Cards for Marquis

Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus had this bit of information in his trade/trade rumor piece, Will's Mill.

 

I'm told that the Mets are discussing shipping Heilman to the Cardinals in return for free-agent-to-be Jason Marquis. The Mets would need to fill the bullpen slot, possibly reaching out for Roberto Hernandez or shifting Brian Bannister to the pen.

Why would the Mets do this? Do they need an extra pinch hitter off the bench? Heilman as a pitcher is much better then Maqruis, and I believe is CHEAPER...No sense in GIVING the Cards the better pitcher, for a free agent to be.
