According to this the Cubs had scouts at a tryout of four Cubans.

I watched Cuba lose to the Netherlands in last sunday's final of the Haarlem Baseball Week tournament. Quite frankly, I wasn't too impressed with either team.

From Kevin Goldstein's BP chat today, not Cub-related, but on international scouting:

redsoxin2004 (Columbia, CT): Where is the next up and coming hot bed for international talent? Which teams seem to be the leaders in scouting Asia, South America, The Islands (Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Cuba, etc..), Europe, etc...

Kevin Goldstein: In general, the teams with the big money are the teams who do the best in the International markets.

I don't know if I agree with what a scout told me, but one I spoke to recently is convinced that in the next 10 years, a Yao-like talent with come out of China. Some kid will start throwing 97 mph and get signed, but like Yao, it will be more of a one-off thing than any sort of sudden influx of talent.

I don't recall this Goldstein guy from before, but I'm seeing his name everywhere today.

That China/Yao prediction is so pointless.

A country with a billion people that has recently started showing interest in baseball is going to produce a really talented player in the next 10 years. Wow, what a stretch.
