"Part of it is inactivity," Baker said of Dempster's problems. "He's had a number of days in between games. You just can't break up the whole bullpen the way it's been formulated. It's been pretty good until recently. We just have to get it back together."

Omg....Dusty it's your job to make sure he gets enough work. arrrrrrgggghhhh.

I'm glad he's keeping him as the closer. I'd love nothing more then to see him rack up a handful of saves before the deadline and increase his value.

And, yes, Dusty needs to take it upon himself to get Dempster more work.

If you want to know why Dusty doesn't put Dempster in more in non-save situations, it's probably because everybody complained about him using him in non-save situations too much last year. Dusty does everything to extremes, which means he could do one thing, get reemed for it, then do the opposite and people are still mad at him. That's how he looks at things. Just FYI.

That insinuates that Dusty cares about other people's opinions and that he'll adjust accordingly. If this was remotely true then no Cubs hitter would ever swing, every starter would be pulled at 95 pitches, there would be no sac bunts, young kids would play all the time, etc.

I'm not complaining that Dempster is still closer...he should be. But the fact that Dusty realizes that Dempster is underused, and yet still allowed it to happen infuriates me.

It's out of his control man.

The only reasoning I could come up with is that he thinks if he starts using him in non-save situations a lot again, he thinks everyone will start complaining about that again. Given that, he probably views the current situation as the lesser of two evils because at least if Dempster gets hurt, people won't put it all on Dusty for overworking another pitcher. In his defense, I can see why he would think irrationally. People have been complaining about his overuse of both the starters and relievers since he got here. No matter what he does, it's wrong, and that sucks for him.

There are so many things that people have complained about that he hasn't listened to though, that I doubt this is the case.

How does any of this make sense? And how can you even attempt to defend Baker with this logic? Baker does not adjust what he does because fans get pissed at him. And why would using Dempster occasionally in non-save situations have to equal using him a lot in non-save situations?

To go back to an earlier point you made about the young players, for Dusty, the amount of playing time he's giving to young guys this season is very extreme. Just look at his career. Like I said, he does things to extremes. His extremes might be a little different than other managers, but they are obvious nontheless. I never said he was doing the right thing in either circumstance. I'm just trying to figure out why he does what he does.

Good news: Dusty smart enough to realize Dempster is probably a better closer than he's shown this season.

Bad news: Dusty stupid enough not to realize that this is pretty much all his fault for sitting him down 6 days a week.
