Yeah I guess it's always better to overpay for top-tier talent than it is to overpay for mediocre and less-then-mediocre talent.

 

It depends on the overall construction of the team, of course. It would have been stupid for the Royals or the Devil Rays to overpay for a top tier free agent in the offseason because they had no realistic shot at winning.

 

Roster/salary analysis has shown that overpaying to fill a hole on a team with a realistic possibility of contending is usually a sound decision.
