So is Matt Murton, Juan Pierre, Aramis Ramirez, on and on and on. Why single out Jones? Everyone has pretty much been terrible.

I'm not arguing that OBP isn't a problem. But it is a team problem with the exception of a few guys, not just a Jacque Jones problem.

I chose to show Jones' number for May because that just happens to coincide with when the Cubs went into the crapper. This month Jones has been pretty much the only consistent hitter on the team. The team is dreadful all around.

No one said those other players haven't been bad, you're the one who excluded Jones in the original post.

Jacque Jones is hardly the problem with this year's team anyway.

I'm not singling out Jones. You are singling him out by saying he isn't the problem. I am merely saying he is part of the problem because he is. Aramis has been part of the problem as well, same with Pierre. Murton hasn't been part of the OBP problem, but he has been somewhat of an overall problem. Pierre has been an enormous problem. The difference, of course, is he's a first year player who shouldn't be counted on to do a whole lot. Jones is highly compensated and guaranteed money long-term and has to produce.

If you want to talk about THE problem, it is the overall organizational philosopy that ignores the value of the walk. Pitchers who gives up walks by the truckload and hitters who don't take them are all part of the problem.

Getting Crisp or Bradley would have cost dearly.

The guy the Cubs should have got was Soriano. I wish the Soriano for Murton rumor went through.

Oh hell no. Murton for Soriano? I'll pass everyday, and twice on Sundays. Slumping Murton for Soriano? Still, no.

Bradley wouldn't have cost that much, unless you're aluding to Colletti's former ties to this club and the spite he holds. I don't think he'd make any deal with us unless he were fleecing us.

I'm assuming (hoping) the Soriano for Murton thing was sarcasm.

I realize the walk is sexy, which probably explains why people don't want to trade Murton for Soriano, but I doubt 5 more walks from a 6 hitter would make much of a difference, but keep hating on Jones.

Jones has been a heckuva lot better than the beloved rookies, Cedeno and Murton. The guys who have taken off May, with their .556 and .538 ops in May. How the heck do you expect to win when these two along w/ Neifi/Hairston are in the lineup??

The walk is sexy? The problem is the walk isn't sexy enough for the Cubs to see it's value. Better yet, it's not macho enough for the Cubs to see its value.

If the walk's so potent, Oakland shouldn't be 6th in walks and 23rd in runs. Give me batting average & slugging anyday of the week. The Cubs need to lift their pathetic .243 batting average.

So you deny that the lack of walks has been the Cubs biggest problem offensively in recent years? It's all just been one giant coincidence?

They need both.

For the record:

NYY and Bos are 1 and 2 in walks in the AL, 3 and 5 in runs.

LAD and Cin are 1 and 2 in walks and runs in the NL.

the biggest problem last year was patterson & neifi batting in front of lee too much. patterson should have been in Double A and Neifi should have been batting 8th.

mike cameron, troy glaus, coco crisp, reggie sanders, jim thome, aaron rowland, alfonso soriano and rafeal furcal all changed teams this year.

not too mention a lot of rumors flew around about guys like arod, man ram, mench and floyd....i think we could have gotten a deal for someone done instead of the money we overpaid jones and neifi!

throw in that the sox got vasquez when we certainly could have used a proven starter early this season!

where would thome or glaus play on the cubs? prior to 06, lee was one of the most durable guys in the game.

you might have something w/ vasquez. who did the sox give up to get him?

El Duque, Luis Vizcaino, and Chris Young(who is comparable to Pie).
