So we have Bynum, Theriot, and Perez on the roster. These are true 25th men -- guys who are fortunate just to sit on the back end of any MLB bench.

Last May we had Enrique Wilson, Macias, and Perez on the roster.

I've never understood how a big payroll team can end up with multiple players of this type. Tim has pointed out that this happens a lot, and not just to the Cubs.

Why does it happen? Is the talent pool thin?

Hendry likes guys like that, guys who can, supposedly, play multiple positions.

Basically, Hendry likes bad players for no apparent reason.

Having one guy on the roster who might not be great, but can play multiple positions is good because it frees up roster spots for more talented players, as he can fill in in an emergency situation virtually anywhere.

Having four guys on the team who do this is pointless, stupid, and defeats the whole purpose of flexibility.
