Thanks Nathan!

PEORIA, IL— The Peoria Chiefs in conjunction with the Chicago Cubs have announced that shortstop Dylan Johnston has been placed on the 7-day disabled list retroactive to Tuesday April 25th. Infielder Jonathan Mota will join the Chiefs today in Dayton to take Johnston’s place on the roster.

Johnston’s left thumb was injured on a broken bat groundout Monday night against Burlington. Johnston is expected to see a doctor in Chicago today to determine the extent of the injury. In 17 games, Johnston is batting .273 with a team high six stolen bases, two doubles, two triples and two RBI.

Mota was signed by the Cubs as a non-drafted free agent in 2004 out of Valencia, Venezuela. The 18-year old appeared in 63 games last season with the Boise Hawks of the Northwest League batting .236 with no homers and 22 RBI. Mota started 20 games at second base and 43 at shortstop last season. He and Kyle Reynolds will both play shortstop in Johnston’s absence.

The Chiefs play game two of a four game series in Dayton tonight at 7:00 EST with Mitch Atkins on the mount. Thursday night the Chiefs face Major Leaguer Paul Wilson on a rehab assignment with Donald Veal on the mound. After the quick roadtrip the Chiefs kick off an eight game homestand Saturday April 29th with the first post-game Fireworks show of the season. Saturday is also Peoria County Government Night and Donate Life Night at O’Brien Field as the Chiefs face the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays at 6:30 PM.

Aw, that stinks. :(

Johnston showed pretty nice patience at the plate, although it seemed like his defense needed a bit of work. It sucks to see this setback, nevertheless. Hope he gets better soon!

Any time I see "7-day DL" I think it's not that serious. But yeah, I'm pretty excited about Johnston. Hope he gets back real soon.
