Have 600 million? You could buy the Braves and Turner South

It appears the Braves, along with regional cable network Turner South, are up for sale.

Here is a list on prospective buyers.

 

Speculation has centered around corporations that are major players in the regional sports cable network business, including Philadelphia-based Comcast and Los Angeles-based Fox, and locals with strong ties to pro sports, including Falcons owner Arthur Blank, former Braves and Hawks owner Ted Turner and, as possible leader of a group, former Braves-Hawks-Thrashers president Stan Kasten.

 

Blank has acknowledged interest in looking at the deal; the others have declined comment.

 

 

And the price tag?

 

John Mansell, sports and media analyst for California-based Kagan Research, last month estimated the value of the Braves and Turner South at about $600 million, with the Braves accounting for about $400 million of that.

 

Mansell and other experts have suggested a buyer likely would turn Turner South into a regional sports network with the Braves as the centerpiece of its programming.

Apparenly, Ted Turner says he has no interest in re-purchasing the Braves.

Atlanta marketing executive Bob Hope, a former Braves official under Turner, said it would have been out of character for Turner to repurchase the team.

 

"Ted's not one to retrace his steps," Hope said. "His mentality is that of an explorer. He's the ultimate 'been-there, done-that' type of guy."
