A few months back, it was assumed that contract extensions for Dusty Baker and Jim Hendry were a slam-dunk, but now you hear whispers that this may not be the case.

That’s not to say that MacPhail couldn’t turn around tomorrow and grant them both another term with the Cubs, but why would he do it now — or in spring training as has been previously advertised?

As for Baker, unless he works some magic next year, why would you dream of extending him when it seems like he has no interest in managing here anyway?

I'm curious on why writers insist on the fact that Baker doesn't want to be in Chicago. Has Baker ever said that?

I agree 100% that Hendry and Baker should be gone if things remain as they are. I still will give Hendry a chance until Opening Day. Baker....I wish he was gone at the All-Star break last season.

i don't think hendry will be doing a lot of negotiating for the cubs next season.

and epstein and depo better still be available.

I agree. Can you imagine if Epstein came to the northside and won a WS? I would imagine a man who ended the Red Sox WS drought, and then turned around and ended the Cubs; he would be a GOD forever in baseball.

That story is from Mr. Gloom-and-Doom, Barry Rozner.

He knows that Dusty has no interest in being the manager of the Cubs.

He knows that Dusty wants to manage the Diamondbacks.

He knows that Dusty wants to manage the Dodgers.

Of course, if you ask Dusty, he says exactly the opposite.

Why believe a man who is brutally honest, almost to a fault, when he looks you in the eye and tells you something?

Isn't it more fun to believe someone who never leaves his newsroom and fills his column out with e-mail humor sent in by readers?

Wasn't there an article a while back saying that Epstein had interest in coming to the Northside? I think I remember reading that a while ago.

I'd love to have Epstein as GM of the Cubs.

What about Tim Stuart for GM? :D

No Depo, thank you very much. We saw in LA how quickly he can wreck a post-season team. If Wood makes 30 starts this year, he'd forget about his past injury record and sign him to a 5+ year deal.

depo had 2 years to build that team. not nearly long enough, especially considering that it take a lot more than 2 years to build a farm system.

Tom Shaer was in my office yesterday and I asked him if he had any inside scoops and he said that he thinks the Cubs will give Hendry an extension any day now. Edited by jwhatti

I think Hendry will be extended but Dusty wont.

I'm confused, doesn't Hendry, if he's extended, have the option of extending Baker or not? It's not an ownership decision, is it?

quite frankly, i'd rather be rid of hendry than dusty. although dusty is a serious handicap with inappropriate players, if hendry simply acquired good players we wouldn't have such a problem with dusty.

dusty has shown that he can win with good players, but allowing him to play subpar OBP guys at important positions is an upper-managemnet decision. the problem of dusty could easily be remedied:

1. by choosing NOT to re-sign neifi.

2. by never allowing macias around the team again.

3. by NOT re-upping rusch at a hefty raise, while concurrently acquiring a superior starter.

4. by getting a veteran RF starter with a good OBP.

5. by not acquiring mediocre veterans at positions where we already have promising young talent. (goes hand-in-hand with #1 and #2)

here's a simple breakdown:

1. increase team OBP while decreasing opponents'.
