    Cubs Video

Bruce Levine of 670 The Score reported that the Cubs are considering trading starting pitcher Jameson Taillon before next week's trade deadline.

Taillon, 32 years old, signed a four-year deal with the Cubs prior to the 2023 season. He is making $18 million this season and is also signed through the 2026 season at $18 million per year. The righty pitcher stumbled badly in the first year of his contract (4.84 ERA) but has rebounded nicely in 2024, posting a 3.10 ERA in 93 innings pitched.

Taillon certainly has value to contending teams but given his age and a contract that goes through his age 34 season, it's hard to predict what kind of value teams will put on the additional years that will pay him $36 million in the final two years of the deal.

Additionally, Bob Nightengale of USA Today added some weight to this report, mentioning the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees have inquired on Taillon.

Interesting that breslow would be after taillon. He must see upside in there.

Side bar: i wish jed had gone after the bosox job and breslow took over the Cubs.

Given how Jed operates, no one will be traded until he thinks he's getting good value. I expect they will make enough trades to get them under the luxury tax if they are not already under it and if anything else happens we will be pleasantly surprised by the return.

Oversight on my part. I post these from a different section of the website and forgot to check here first.

A catching prospect to keep an eye on is 22-year-old Kyle Teel, who’s playing at Double-A Portland in the Red Sox organization. Teel is hitting .305 with nine homers, 51 RBIs and an .861 OPS in 68 games at Double-A this season, and he’s a good defensive player. The Red Sox selected him at No. 14 overall in the 2023 MLB Draft.

He’d be a quality addition for the Cubs, though it would take an expanded deal that includes Taillon and others going back to the Red Sox.

Levine name checking Teel feels notable.  I'd assume it'd be Taillon and additional young pitching Breslow feels strongly about (Wesneski?), as there's no way Taillon gets Teel directly.

I'd deal Taillon+Leiter for Teel and a lottery ticket. The only downside is you probably don't see Teel until very late 2025 or early 2026.

They do have a ton of holes elsewhere currently - namely 2b and 1b, plus they could always use pen help. Maybe Taillon + Lieter? Mervis most likely doesn't move the needle at all for them, but they've been trotting out Dom Smith at 1b while Casas rehabs. Morel at 2b for them would be a match. But then we're getting at the point where we are giving up a ton of current major league value where we would need something additional coming back with Teel, which I don't know if they have the almost ready mlb pieces to make something like that work.

The way he's pitching right now is as someone you could trust giving the ball to in the playoffs. I imagine his market is going to be robust and hard for Jed to say no to.

Add the Astros and Padres too.

    Starting to feel pretty inevitable

More teams wanting him = better prospect coming back... in theory. Or they're all interested because Jed is only asking for an 18 y/o MIF or a 25 y/o reliver who strikes a lot of guys out, but also walks 2 batters/inning

Don't forget to sleep with a rabbit foot under your pillow for the next 5 nights.

I've got the desire for Teel as well. Not sure Jeb can afford the asking price

I have ALOT to complain about with Jed, but I’m at the point where I almost trust anything he does trade wise. He’s been really horsefeathers good in all these deals. If/when he decides to move Taillon, I trust what he decides to accept.

Yeah. You can criticize his team building and some of his FA signings, but his trades have been very good. The worst that comes to mind was the Madrigal/Heuer trade, but at the time Madrigal was a 110 wRC+ 2b with 1.8 fWAR in the first 83 games of his career, and Heuer got derailed by injuries.

I just don’t even know where to begin on Taillon. I have no idea what he will bring back. The Astros system suckssss. I wonder if there’s a deal to be done with the Yankees that brings back Dominguez? Or with the Red Sox that brings back Teel? Or the O’s with one of Basallo, Mayo, Kjerstad? Taillon straight up probably isn’t getting that headliner, but I wonder what it would take. I’d like a legit catching prospect coming through the system that’s close. Love Mo, but I don’t think he’s ever going to be out everyday catcher.

& the O’s could get desperate if they can’t land Skubal or Crochett meaning one of the 3 listed could be available.

I think taillons ill gotten bootie will be a disappointment to most. Think more in terms of the darvish deal without a caissie involved.

I hope they can do an expanded trade for Teel from the red sox, Taillon plus Triantos or Alcantara plus Leiter or Miller gets it done?

I'd love to know who else the Sox were offering instead of madrigil. Or If they did

From the little I've read. He's a plus defensively. That would be an improvement over amaya.

Anyone catch what Heyman said? Seeing on Twitter that he said Suzuki has been involved in trade talks. Hoping the context around what he said is along the lines of “teams have asked about his availability”. It was said on the B/R app, but I don’t have -
