  1. He used his HOF speech to call out a non-white Cubs player. I'm pretty sure that it had nothing to do with Sammy being Hispanic. +1
  2. Every day? No. At all? Definitely. He will do stuff that some people choose to call the "right way" because almost every manager tries to do stuff to justify their job and the media eats that crap up. He will do it, and he will probably do it more than most. I'm not sure I agree with you on predicting his Major League manager philosophy, but bunting in the first inning with a #2 hitter would infuriate me to no end. On the one hand, I think if there's reason to speculate either way, it's more likely that Sandberg would be the overmanaging type than the opposite. If my ideal is a set-it-and-forget-it type manager who doesn't do much but knows how to handle pitchers, I don't think it's all that unreasonable to think that Sandberg wouldn't be the best candidate for that. (Nor is it likely that he's the greatest people person, from what we've heard, but who really knows.) Conversely, what reason DO we have to think that he'd make a good manager. What makes him a managerial candidate other than the fact that he really, really wants to be one? Only one I can think of - his relatively successful, albeit short, Minor League manager's career. Not sure that necessarily translates To Major League success, though it doesn't rule it out either.

  4. show me where people have said that they do not want the cubs playing good fundamental baseball. hint: you will be searching a really really long time. people are not opposed to bunting so much as bunting in dumbass situations like with the #2 hitter in the first inning, when giving away outs is the last thing a manager should be doing. I agree that a #2 hitter bunting in the first inning is utterly ridiculous. Do you honestly think, though, that Sandberg would manage a Major League team that way? I am not necessarily too keen on him becoming the Cubs manager, but I've got to believe the bunting scenerio you described has more to do with the situation (minor league players needing to learn how to bunt in a game) rather than giving up outs in the first inning because that's "playing the game right." I just don't think Sandberg would do that in a Major League manager's uniform.
  5. Look at the sticky at the top of the page. Er, "announcement" Missed it. Thanks.
  6. Anyone have a link where I can watch it live?
  7. Selig might have to step in. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/7130700/bud-selig-hints-mediating-theo-epstein-comp-talks
  8. I'm thinking, if this doesn't get done, hire Hoyer as GM with the understanding that we get Theo next fall.
  9. Does anybody know how baseball attendance has been in general? I would think economic downturns would contribute to a decline in interest.
  10. Wow...1st game of the year and we're already talking about putting him in the pen. Even if he doesn't come out due to an injury, I don't think you pitch him past the 6th anyway.
  11. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/ct-spt-0209-around-town--20110208,0,1376165.column He says the Cards are better because they got Theriot and the Cubs are much better this year. Now I feel so much better about this season.
  12. Doesn't mean he wouldn't have been a good fit as the bench coach. With the Cubs in transition and bringing up a lot of these young players that Sandberg has coached and been around the last four years would have been very beneficial to the Cubs and these players. With Sandberg as Quade's bench coach, every time the Cubs went on a losing streak, there would be a loud clamor for Sandberg to replace him. I don't blame Quade for not going with Sandberg. I wouldn't want that issue to hound me either.
  13. I don't blame him for trying to see if he can get on a Major League club. The Cubs asked him to get some experience in the minors -- which he did -- and he got an interview. The Cubs never stipulated how much time he had to spend in the minors nor ever promised him a job. Perhaps staying in the minors another 3 or 4 years would have given Sandberg a better chance to be the Cubs manager. Who really knows why the organization didn't give him the helm. He would have commanded more money than Quade so that could have been a factor (however, he probably would bring more revenue to the organization than Quade). Maybe they felt he still didn't have enough experience and that the Cubs need a winner now. After 102 plus years of no WS title, perhaps they feel they could not take a risk on an experiment. Whatever the reason, Sandberg was an asset to the Cubs and we should all wish him well. I have no heartburn with the way this turned out.
  14. There is no way they will shorten the season. Even for teams that have no chance to make the playoffs, they would lose too much money. And as we all know...it's all about the money. I can definitely see them adding an additional wild card team from each league. This will potentially add 3 more games to the post season. OR....they will change the Division Series to 7 games (the way it should be). I'm not sure they would do both of these as this would bring baseball into November. But hey, anything is possible because we know it's all about the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. My two cents is that they should simply change the Division Series to 7 games and leave the rest alone.
  15. ...per Scott Rolen. He also says we need a younger team because of the grueling day schedule. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/ct-spt-0706-around-town--20100705,0,5504936.column
  16. No, that's he main problem. He's never right. And what the hell are you talking about with Chicago blaming Steve Stone? So he's not right that Colvin should be getting more at bats?
  17. ....but the Cubs are close to winning the World Series....
  18. :rotfl: Now there's a new pitch to add to one's arsenal.
  19. You and Soto should have plenty to smoke in October.
  20. lol...no, I'm not a Cards fan. I've just been disappointed too much by this franchise. I'll stay with them until death, but I sure am losing any faith. Last year was really hard for me. I just took down my Cubs stuff at work, and am putting up Bears.
  21. And what historical evidence leads you to this conclusion? Not any but, its my hope the new ownership is going to dump Hendry and find a GM who knows something about building a good baseball team. When you look at the Cubs core of Lee, Ramirez, Soto, Fukudome, Bradley, in the hands of a good GM, there's a potentially really good baseball team. Well, I hope you're right, but we've got 101 years going against us...not to mention the fact, that other than the Yankees, the Cardinals have won more championships than any other team in major league baseball history. If I were a betting man, I wouldn't be laying my money out on the Cubs.
  22. And what historical evidence leads you to this conclusion?
  23. If the offense remembers how to hit, we will take this division...no doubt.
