  1. Um, these are the Cubs. So I wouldn't say there's no excuse. That said, it'd be great to have them clinch this thing tonight, and one would think there's a legitimate shot for them to.
  2. Living here in Minnesota, I'd have to say that Silva would be a good back of the rotation kind of guy. He had a horrible year last year but has been decent this year. Not a headliner, but probably not much different than Marquis. He has the ability to go deeper in games, though. A couple of years ago I think he had a 70-something pitch complete game. The Twins are in trouble, though. They'll want a good return. Hunter's contract is up and Santana was very unhappy with the lack of moves at the deadline. And the offense has been horrible since the break--last in the AL by a good measure. And they don't have anyone in the system to provide that in the near future. Any trade will be for offensive prospects. There's been open talk of trading Santana now just to reload the offense, since they probably won't be able to afford him when his contract is up next year.
  3. Depending on the actual PTBNL, this doesn't seem that much different than DFAing him.
  4. It's more likely they'll send Gallagher down tomorrow when Dempster is activated' otherwise they'd have 13 pitchers. I think a more likely scenerio is that Fox stays up this weekend while Lee is serving his suspension, then when Lee returns next Tuesday Fox goes back down and Cedeno comes up. But with just a few games, couldn't they cover 1B in house? Why wait on Cedeno? Putting DeRosa at 1B leaves no backup 2B, SS, or 3B on the bench. That makes sense. I couldn't figure out all the infield algebra in my head.
  5. Yeah, I think they chose Fox because he's the best option of people that could handle 1B, and then send him back when Dempster comes off the DL. 6. Yeah, I think they chose Fox because he's the best option of people that could handle 1B, and then send him back when Dempster comes off the DL. With Ward and DeRosa, they've kind of got 1B covered, though. But maybe they don't want to bring up Cedeno or Murton just for a few days. On the other hand, wouldn't Gallagher be the one to go down when Dempster comes back?
  7. People are asking why not Murton. Isn't the question why not Cedeno? Or maybe Fox is just there to fill in as a backup 1B while Lee's gone? But with Izturis gone, wouldn't Cedeno be just as good a callup?
  8. I believe this was my wife's first game at Wrigley: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/1998/B09120CHN1998.htm A great game--Sammy hit is 60th and the Cubs came back from a 10-2 deficit with Orlando Merced's walk off homer in the bottom of the 9th. We got splattered with beer from the upper deck, but who cares?
  9. There's also Francisco Liriano for the Twins as a SP. He could easily fit in that list.
  10. Is anyone else having trouble getting the Gameday Audio to work? I'm getting a Server Busy message.
  11. So is the simple way to say this that the Bears' magic number for home field advantage is 3? After NO's win yesterday, we could assume that this will mean three wins for the Bears, but a win tonight and another Saints loss would make that fairly easy. This team should beat either GB or the Lions, even if the whole defensive line goes down.
  12. I'm already casting my lot with the Twins. At least they know how to develop their talent.
  13. What's the appeal of Izturis? How is he any better than Cedeno?
  14. According to the Fox Story, the cash is coming from the Cubs. Does that make it more likely there's a good prospect coming back?
  15. Wow--so who is on the Pirates now? It seems like they traded 1/3 of their team in the last 24 hours.
  16. The name I saw is Jose Ceda--a 5+ ERA in the Arizona League. Decent BB/K numbers. Basically, they gave Walker away.
  17. I realize that Stewart and Hunter aren't quite Lee caliber players, but they are/were two pretty important pieces of the Twins team. Stewart is their leadoff man and Hunter's really the face of the franchise and at least some source of power besides Morneau. In the last few weeks their top four outfielders were either hobbling or on the DL--if that happened to the Cubs I think everyone would recognize that as a tough situation. That the Twins have been able to be this hot during that stretch is nothing short of amazing to me. It's the kind of thing that's kept me paying more attention to them than the Cubs at this point--at least its a franchise that has a resevoir of young talent and has developed and coached it well. Yes--other teams get through injuries. And injuries to either Santana or Liriano would be more devastating (though Garza at AAA is having an amazing minor league season). But the Twins' run is still an accomplishment.
  18. Tonight is the one game this weekend I'm not going to. The lefty factor, and the fact that it is this lefty, makes me believe the Cubs will be lucky to score one run. Both Bonser and Radke have been sporadic. Frankly, Radke has seemed a bit Rusch-like--giving up large amounts of runs sometimes. I think the Cubs have a chance tomorrow and Sunday, but given how the Twins have been playing of late (won 9 of 10), I don't think the lovable losers have got much chance tonight.
  19. With the Cubs being in (my) town next weekend, I was trying to figure out the pitching matchups. I had hoped that it would be Santana/Prior on Saturday, but the paper today said that Santana will be pitching Friday on the normal four days rest. But then the radio said something about that being the Santana/Prior matchup, meaning that someone (Marmol?) would be skipped in the rotation. Does anyone have a guess about the matchups for the weekend?
  20. Hey, now--I was just at the Twins-Yankees game a week ago where it was pretty close to a full house. Their average is maybe only 20,000, but this is hardly Montreal in the Expos last days. There's some fans here, they're just too "nice." Rondell White, the Twins' new DH, did get a few boos even due to his sub-Mendoza average.
  21. I thought he was supposed to be moving to first--that's why they gave up Casey. What's up with that? They made a trade and thought the overall team defense would be improved by having Hatteberg at 1B. Well, it's clear from Monday's game that their defense is much improved with him in left. At least from the Cubs' perspective. :D

  23. What does this mean for Pie? With Pierre slated for an extension, and assuming Murton does reasonably well, there's no openings in the foreseeable future for him.
  24. Doesn't Lofton have a connection to Chicago though? I remember something about him growing up a Cubs fan. Maybe that would count for something.
  25. Which leads to the question, why not? Is he one of those AAAA kind of pitchers?
