  1. I saw noted in a couple of places that Jermaine Van Buren has racked up 22 saves at Iowa. What's the story on him at this point. I know there were some around here who used to be high on him. Why call up Wellemeyer or Koronka for bullpen work when there's someone doing well in the bullpen in Des Moines?
  2. What's up with this stat? That's kind of an odd correlation. Do the Cubs simply prefer warmer temps?
  3. Plus I thought I heard a quote from Hendry talking about how Gerut would be a good player for them when healthy next year. My guess is that was the selling point--not what he could contribute this year while still recovering.
  4. The CUBS (known as the White Stockings back then) were off that day, after having beaten the New York Mutuals 16-2 in Chicago the day before. They enjoyed a couple days off at home waiting for the Philadelphia Athletics to come to town. At the time, the White Stockings were in first place in the National League, 2.5 games ahead of the Hartford Dark Blues. Ah... the good old days. If that's an actual historical fact, wow. That certainly puts things in perspective.
  5. It doesn't seem like THAT big a loss. From my limited knowledge, Hunter is valuable for defense and his leadership than his hitting. His average isn't all THAT great, and Ford can replace his offense. It's the bench that'll be hurting. I've been wondering about a Walker for Rincon swap, but haven't looked into it enough to know if that would work for both sides.
  6. And Floyd is under contract for next year, too, right? He'd be a decent option for the length of his contract, depending on what the Cubs gave up for him. He takes Burnitz' role next year, and we give Murton/Pie/Montanez (he's doing really well!) a shot.
  7. How many home runs does one team need??? Aside from his power, Soriano seems like another above average hitter. Granted, we'll take what we can get, but this team already has enough power. We need guys who can get on base and move runners over.
  8. It's hard to be objective about things like this. But I do not see how the Twins get to be #4 on the list for the AL. Jon Gordon does a fairly good job, though there's an edginess to his voice that gets a little wearing over time. But the rest of the broadcast is just average at best. There's very little humor from what I can tell. The analysis may be better (Ron's weakness), but overall, it's more boring to me. Pat and Ron get my vote hands down. Edit: The voices from the past feature with this article is pretty cool.
  9. I like this idea. With the OBP Murton's been putting up, having someone above .200 after him is a good idea.
  10. I think Neifi has value for exactly the reason we signed him in the first place--a very good infielder who can hit well above the Mendoza line. He's not trade bait as a starter, but for someone looking to add depth to their bench, he has some value.
  11. Top of the order doing their jobs tonight.
  12. And Murton is batting in the 8 spot because... :?: :?:
  13. Think he'll keep up with Hill's pace from last night?
  14. Lowry's about double Maddux's pitch count. Already over 50. Bring in the bullpen!
  15. Yeah, it's jacked up. Not sure why. Whoever set it up did the usual Burnitz between Lee and Ramirez under lineup. But it's correct under the boxscore. Probably hard to correct during the game.
  16. Someone seriously needs to fix the mlb gameday lineup.
  17. One would think they'd have cancelled by now if that's the case. They're not going to cancel at 9 only to have the rain stop as people walk out the door.
  18. Isn't there a rule about how late a night game can go? Forgive me if this came up earlier...
  19. What about one of those great Chuck Norris movies??? :ducks:
  20. Couldn't the guy who lucked out with that Gameday job come up with anything better than that? Sounds like maybe a concussion, then? That's certainly better than any more serious neck or spine injury.
  21. Is there any report on Clements' condition? Was he conscious?
  22. Well, only if you hold a grudge against his brother. Who's his brother? How could anyone ever dislike Tom Skilling? Jeff Skilling. The enron CEO. Are you serious? Wow. That's what I get for living in Minneapolis. Makes me wonder if I should really have trusted all those weather reports. That's bad news about Clement!
  23. Well, only if you hold a grudge against his brother. Who's his brother? How could anyone ever dislike Tom Skilling?
  24. That must mean we're trading Lee for him!
  25. For all our complaints about Dusty not using rookies, you have to wonder if Jim and Dusty sat down to have a talk. Hendry couldn't get the proven vet. (P. Wilson) that Dusty wanted, so Hendry had to tell him that the best he could do for now were the rookies, that Dusty HAD to play them to see if they could be the answer.
