  1. When you say it's not like your average major league game, are you saying it's more intense than your average major league game? There are only a couple games here in this series. And they are do or die. Put those major league teams in do or die situations and you'll be getting an intense environment from the fans. I think the ESPN commentators have been full of BS on two counts so far. 1) That all these foreign players do such a better job on fundamentals than American born players. 2) That the fans have been comparatively more festive than American fans. The baseball has been incredibly sloppy, with no better focus on fundamentals than major league games. And the fans, have been no more intense than your average playoff crowd, which is what you should compare these games to in the majors and not a mundane regular season game. Frankly, I'd say I've seen much more excitement from fans in regular season games against many rivals. Well, the fans do have drums! Drums are cool!
  2. Short answer: They are cheap. Slightly longer answer: They didn't appreciate his value as a hitter. At the time they let him go he was a 26 year old role player with decent numbers but nothing special. He was going to get a significant raise in 2003 due to arbitration, and Minnesota decided to go elsewhere. They didn't want to pay him more than a million in 2003, which was a terrible business and baseball move. They were paying a lot of other guys a lot more money, and ended up paying the Doug Mientkiewicz more than Ortiz got. It's unfair to say you could predict Ortiz would go from where he was at 26 to where he was at 29 (last season), but it's not unfair to say Minnesota did a poor job of evaluating that situation. Add Seattle to the list of teams of that did a poor job of evaluating Ortiz. After all, they sent him to the Twins as a PTBNL for Dave Hollins.
  3. goooo Ronny. Would like to see him steal a bag.
  4. That's part of what I enjoy about watching the Japanese and the Korean teams. They really do the fundamentals exceptionally well. The defense of Japan was sick (as in very good) last night against the U.S. Of course, so is DLee's defense! :D
  5. Somewhat surprising, so has Fox. Good to see the young catchers looking good. If Fox keeps it up though, he's on top. IMO he has the most promising bat.
  6. Cubs pitchers really need to work on that this Spring Training. Make them work on it for a whole afternoon with Maddux one day!
  7. Hairston's playing well so far this Spring.
  8. Murton now 9 for 18! .500 BA baby! Oh, two doubles, one home run, two walks, and a stolen base! Only one K. I think he's going to succeed all expectations this year (like he did last year).
  9. All Murton does is hit, hit, hit! I love it.
  10. You do remember that just last year Hill was in Single A? In one year, he went from A ball to the Majors. He dominated at Triple A. It's surely a little early to write him off as a starter based on one start early in Spring Training, wouldn't ya say?
  11. Carlos had filthy stuff today. His ball moved a lot. He also hit 97 on the gun. He just struggled with his control. As indicated by his velocity, he was probably overthrowing some...a case of being too pumped up. Only one batter "hit him hard," and that was the Beltre homer. Problem was that he walked a few batters before the home run. Still, his outing was encouraging for me as a whole. Z is going to have a great year.
  12. GAGNE = GOLIATH Don't forget about Gange. I like Dempster though. He did a great closing last year. I see no reason why he can't do it again. If anything, with a year of experience in the roll, he should be better.
  13. Interesting stuff. Thanks for posting it, UK. The numbers show how good Michael Wuertz has become. Very impressive for Wuertz to be on some of those lists. For instance, he's the 3rd best reliever in all of baseball at getting hitters to miss when they swing at the pitch -- behind only Saenez and Brad Lidge, right ahead of Mantei and Nathan. He's right in the middle of some of the best closers in the game. That's impressive! I have some hesitations about Eyre and Howry, but Williamson and Wuertz could be dominant set up guys for the Cubs this year (if they're not traded). They miss a lot of bats. Cubs could have a great bullpen for once.
  14. Burnitz was just as responsible for the disaster in the outfield as the rest of the partcipants. 258/322/435 is pretty much horrible. Point taken. But at least Burny wasn't killing this team in other areas of his game. Personally, I'd rather watch Bernie's futility at the plate, than Alou's evrywhere else. Though neither option is the obvious pereference. :) Burnitz cannot be resigned with the Cubs til May 1.
  15. Of course they will. Hendry has nearly another 20 million dollars to spend. There's no chance that he stands pat.
  16. You're absolutely right. The lineup proposed in this thread is significantly under Hendry's budget.
  17. Marshall's a possibility. I'd guess he's start the year at Double A though. There's also Koronka.
  18. But if Hendry is heckbent on trading Walker Vidro would be a decent choice if: -Vidro is healthy -The Nats picked up some cash If he's healthy, I'm fine with his contact. A little under 8 mil a year is fine for his production (if healthy).
  19. No one knows whether he's healthy or not. Vidro himself has signed up for the baseball world cup, so apparently he thinks he'll be healthy by the spring. I say try to trade for him. He'll have to have a physical before the deal is accepted. Check him out in that physical to really find out the status of his knee. Jerome Williams for Vidro should be enough. Nats need starting pitching.
  20. Hurray for not losing Sing!
  21. You're kidding about Posednik, right? He wouldn't be in the top 30 outfielders that I would choose.
  22. I was going to post a message, but you've captured my feelings. Zito will be much better, and if we can get him from the Athletics now, we'll have no problem affording him next year (when Maddux's contract rolls off). The superior pitching provided by Zito will offset what I believe will be only average production from RF (i.e., the candidates discussed here...Bradley, Wilkerson, Huff, Mench are OK, but not serious impact bats). the problem with Zito is negotiating some sort of extension before trading for him. he's going to command a decent haul in prospects, which is a very high price to pay for a one year rental. Beane won't give anyone permission to talk to Zito about an extension (so far). maybe it's just a negotiating tactic. I hear ya, but I have confidence in Hendry to sign him to an extension. After all, who would want to leave Chicago?! The Cubs still have too many pitchers. Two of Welly, Wuertz, and Novoa could easily be traded. Hill may or may not pan out. The Cubs would still have Marshall, Guzman, and Ryu as rotation candidates close to the Bigs.
  23. I'm in the minority I know, but I don't like it. I'd rather have Bradley in center, and have gone after an impact bat for right. Bradley is a better player than Pierre and he would have cost less in a trade. Mitre was one of my favorite Cubs...I'm gonna miss him. I still remember Pinto's dominating start in Spring Training last year. Oh well....
