  1. Even at his career norms, I think it would be extremely optimistic thinking that a prospect could just step in and provide similar production (and GG-calibur defense to boot) for a fraction of the money Derrek will earn. I wonder if they couldn't hammer out a deal like Aramis' where there's a smaller base, but if he meets certain levels of production after the second year (2007) he could force the club to tear it up and let him walk as a FA? In my mind that would insure the Cubs against paying too much, and it would provide Derrek with the peace of mind that if he continues to put up these kinds of numbers he could get one more big crack at free-agency at the age of 32.
  2. It seems that Hendry's pattern with guys he wants to keep around has been to prevent them from reaching FA (Wood, DLee, Aramis) altogether. I would expect them to get something done this offseason rather than wait until next year.
  3. I dunno, there sure was a lot of angst when Choi was traded for Lee. And much of that was due to age/salary concerns. But you are right, Choi performed worse than expected, and Lee has obviously gone above and beyond anyone's expectations. Should have been more specific. My point was that noone is calling to play these guys over guys who are tearing it up, ala Lee's current numbers. We're asking that the kids play over the marginal guys, see also: Neifi. Fair enough. And you are absolutely correct in that assertion. You do have to take the players oldcubsfan mentioned in the context of who they were sitting behind, no question. Still, there's also no doubt that some folks don't just overvalue our propsects, they do so almost to the point of being as blind to their shortcomings as Dusty is to those of his veteran players, imo. At any rate, I don't want to rehash all of those old arguments any more than anyone else does, so I'll shut up now. :D

  5. the cubs will be more in a position to be sellers than buyers in the next couple weeks. *sigh* It's definitely starting to look that way. I'm an optimist to a fault, but even I can't bring myself to feel good about this team anymore. This sucks.
  6. What about the Cubs, Hoops, do you think Hendry will be content to sit tight with what they've got, or do you think there could be a waiver-wire move for another impact player if they're still close?
  7. Didn't Chief running back Joe Delaney die trying to save a kid from drowning? I don't really disagree with your base premise, that athletic achievement shouldn't be confused with heroism. But there have been plenty of sports figures who are true heroes. Um, Drew Rosenhaus (sp) also saved a kids life recently, and nobody's calling him a hero. Word is that he's also having the kid hold out of Kindergarten next year. But seriously, how slimy is it to then call the media and announce to the world that you saved the kid's life? Anyhoo, back to steroids...
  8. I suspect if Hendry could've done this deal for Hollandsworth, he would be gone without a second thought.
  9. Below average? I would have to disagree with you. Aram has really improved defensively and is average to slightly above average, IMHO. Overall, I would call ARam the best 3rd basemen in the National League this year. I would put him second to only ARod this year. His defense has been solid and he is starting to become a legitimate All Star with his bat. ARam does need to work on defense again. Last year he was solid. This year he is tied for 4th worst in the league with 13 errors. Several of those errors have taken place in recent games where he seems to be having a problem with his throw. Hopefully, he will iron that out and get back on track to how he was fielding last year. His groin problems may be keeping him from taking a good step into his throws. Yea. And alot of bad hops that he gobbled right up last year are playing him like a video game. I wonder what has changed.... Aramis HAS been beat up for much of the season, I wonder if that doesn't have something to do with his defensive struggles?
  10. Great call. Our bullpen is the best in the league and they have shown great ability to hold one-run leads. What team have you been watching? Even if a guy has a 4.5 ERA that means there is a good chance he won't give up a run. How many times do you have to see Wood/Prior/Zambrano give up leads in the 8th or 9th to figure out that a tiring starter is not as good as a mediocre reliever. Or how many times do you have to see them go to the DL to figure out they are being overworked That guy with a 4.5 ERA would give up a run, on average, every other inning. I don't know if that's what I would consider a "good" chance...
  11. And again with the second guessing. MrWood is the only one that said to pull Prior after the 7th. In this situation, Dusty's hands are tied. There is nobody trustworthy in the pen except Dempster and we need him for the 9th. Yesterday and today are both products of not having a decent arm in the pen. Also, you cannot expect to win too many games when you only score 2 runs at home. You can't expect your starters to throw complete games every day. No, but in a close game, a tiring Prior couldn't be much less effective than our trainwreck of a bullpen, could he? That's not Baker's fault. I have no problem with Prior coming out for the 8th. I do have a problem with Dusty leaving him in there after he gave up two hits to start the inning. You'll get no argument from me on that. But freaking out because Dusty sent Prior out for the 8th (not you, X, but others did) seems a little over the top. Dusty has many faults, and has made many mistakes, but given what he has to work with right now, it's perfectly acceptable to me to try to squeeze one more inning from Mark.

  13. I don't disagree with you, but I don't fault Dusty for that. Seriously, who in the pen (besides Dempster) do you REALLY trust late in a 1-run game right now? I can't think of one.
  14. ESPN doesn't have a clue. [Overstating the Obvious]True enough. But based on what we've heard about the discussions JH had with Cincy, he's not likely to overpay with our best prospects. If Texas' asking price is as high as he indicates, I'd be shocked if he wound up in Chicago.[/Overstating the Obvious]
  15. I could be wrong (wouldn't be the first time, even today!), but I think Burnitz has a pretty significant option in his contract next year that would likely prevent him from being back anyway.
  16. adequate defense? I'd say he's had Stellar Defense. Ahhh, robbing Pujols of the HR in RF at St. Louis really comes to mind on that one. That was nice. But where he has really made a difference is in cutting off balls in the gap, holding guys to singles, hitting the cutoff man with strong throws, etc. He has really saved alot of runs this year. Take yesterday's game for example. By my count he prevented runs from scoring three times in that game by simply making a solid throw home. Granted, one of those runs eventually scored, but through no fault of his.
  17. Thank God the Hawkeyes should be good this year...
  18. Well when you have scored 1 run this series in the first 23 innings against starters with 5+ ERA True enough. Instead of :? , I probably should've used :x
  19. You know it's bad when you don't believe your team can overcome a 2-0 deficit, with four innnings to play, against Horatio Ramirez... :?
  20. Similar article on Cubs.com this afternoon: Nomar's Rehab
  21. Not sure on Williamson, but apparently Nomar's rehab is going pretty well. There was an article on Cubs.com this afternoon about that very subject. Nomar's Rehab He's taking grounders and hitting off of a tee, though he doesn't speculate on a return date, the article does say rather hopefully that it could be less than a month.
  22. I agree. Actually, I kinda wish Todd would just shut up and play ball. Last year it seemed like he was always on every single radio show talking about Stone and Baker, and him and Grudz, and what have you.
  23. i'm sorry... i'm no stat genius... but how do you get an OBP lower than your batting average... ie blanco Easy. Sacrifices count against your OBP but not your average.
  24. I don't know if it's fair to say that teams dealing with Hendry have gotten crap in return. Though Choi and Hill haven't been the superstar major leaguers that many of us thought they would be, they have been pretty useful players to their respective teams. Additionally, Cruz and Farnsworth have had success in Atlanta and Detroit respectively, and I would argue that we didn't get much back for those guys. Note - the author of this post does not wish to start or engage in a debate about Cruz/Choi/Hill I'm more of the leaning that other GM's probably regard Hendry as a guy that's actually pretty fair to deal with - it usually appears (from my own observations anyway) that when he trades with someone, everyone walks away from the deal feeling like they got their moneys' worth, so to speak.
