  1. maybe some veteran posters need to be re-fundamentalized in the gritty teachings of simple math and basic economics of aging
  2. i can't believe that after all these years of nsbb there are still people making the types of arguments on this specific page.
  3. this team is kind of like a layperson of just above average knowledge of baseball via mainstream media outlets drafting a fantasy team then wondering why carlos pena is no more valuable than billy butler. this organization has long overvalued their guys, and held an impossible faith that at some point it's all going to click, having no clue as to why it never does while it is painfully obvious to most of the outside world that there is no clicking device whatsoever.
  4. what about OBP w/RISP haha this team is dumbing to watch
  5. I don't really understand how you can say the things you are saying. They have not been competitive. They've avoided long-term contracts because Hendry put them in such a crap position and there was no money available, not out of strategy. They've opened up spots for young players in a way they haven't done in a long, long time? What? Castro forced them to play him and in a way Colvin did last spring, sort of. They cleared the way for Cashner by dumping Silva, but that's the only clearing they've done, and it was a no brainer of a move. The change is Castro and Soto are something they never had or never produced when Hendry was in charge of that development. Jim Hendry is a piss poor GM. He's been given uprecedented opportunities to produce a winner in Wrigley and he's struggled to compete with the Florida Marlins when it comes to what matters most, wins. There is no mythological philosophy that better fits Jim Hendry than the philosophy of the guy who lucked into a position and was signed to extensions twice by outgoing superiors. He's done a terrible job and it would be nothing short of idiotic to think he will suddenly learn how to do a better job. and even there, i thought it was more quade than hendry.
  6. the team really congregated around edmonds to congratulate him on tying the game with a homerun in the bottom of the ninth. someone says something to soto, and with a look of mild disgust geo seems to reply "no (dookie)", then kind of shakes his head
  7. the year really has been incredible for rookies with bright futures in the nl jose tabata pedro alvarez dominic brown mike stanton logan morrison ike davis josh thole (not sure how highly regarded he was) mat latos (i know he pitched some last year, but i'd consider him a rookie) brett wallace is up now mike leake travis wood had a great opening madison bumgarner pitched some last year, too, but only a handful of innings chris heisey i feel like i could keep going, and this is without mentioning the heavy hitters already mentioned or even talking about guys like chapman who will probably see action come september. very exciting stuff.
  8. word on the streets is that the dodgers are trying to get lilly AND theriot. ethan martin, your table is ready. :)
  9. i guess the real question becomes, would you deal a guy like sean marshall for wilson ramos? the relief market is shallow at best, and marshall is dominant this season. being cheap and under team control through 2012 could net a nice return...
  10. twins also got cash but gave up a non-prospect, LHP joe testa in addition to ramos
  11. Ramos scratched from his AAA start. Always liked him as a catching prospect, and if we had paid Capps it'd be a nice return for the Cubs. as it is, good job by Washington
  12. I don't disagree, but it's important to consider that Lilly by no means has locked up Type-A status.
  13. Remember that time the Indians got Carlos Santana from the Dodgers for Casey Blake? =P~
  14. Colletti says he's willing to move prospects, has some salary flexibility. Go get some prospects, Jim. Ned is begging to get prospect raped. Take the money and run.
  15. Were they singing Go Cubs Go? Underrated post.
  16. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/not-every-day-a-starlin-rises/ this is a pretty cool article about castro, as well. posted a couple days ago, and i'm sure most of you read fangraphs, but if not,
  17. Yeah, I feel the same way about Martin. If we could land a Wade Davis, I think that would be interesting. I think he could do very well with Rothschild. Problem with dealing with the Rays is that they understand the value of cheap production, unlike the Cubs, Mets, or Dodgers.
  18. Andrew Lambo and Ethan Martin for Ted Lilly and I'm absolutely thrilled. If the Cubs somehow can get Scott Elbert thrown in, well, I don't want Hendry to save his job, but it'd be a nice parting gift.
  19. most of the jerk stuff is way overblown, but escobar lollygags like none other. i think him lollypopping a toss to first the other day that almost got glaus' hand chopped off ala Derrek Lee a couple years ago was the final straw. but then he slowly waded under a pop fly that he proceeded to drop. if that kind of play is as often as the braves announcers made it seem during that game, i can see why he's out.
  20. oh, also of important note here: if you don't appreciate the humor of IMB or Treeman, this league probably isn't for you. Most of these guys, in fact, all of these guys are younger than me and I'm 29. So...
  21. Not sure if anyone else here has ever played Mogul Sim, but it's a pretty decent sim. Basically, our league is looking for a few good GMs, and I figure I'd try to recruit some NSBBers. the website is here the available teams: Brewers Pirates Astros Dodgers Expos (were the Marlins, who moved back to Montreal) Padres (Maybe, the guy just recently hasn't been around. youd have to inquire further with the commish) Orioles Indians Rangers I am the Cubs GM over there, and it basically goes like this: we are currently doing the offseason free agent bidding prior to the 2018 season. So, obviously, things have changed. Some were prospects flamed out, some no names became stars, and players that were drafted since the beginning have come up while big names have retired. You don't need the Mogul game to play. We have a commish who does all the simming, and he doesn't GM a team for fairness' sake. He is a very fair commish, but, be warned, he doesn't put up with stupidity, and you will get yelled at. We all get yelled at. And often. Sometimes it's honestly overwhelming, but this has completely taken over my fantasy baseball life, as it were. You pay players on a salary that is determined by market size and whether you can get fans to the park. If you don't manage your prospects correctly -- you have 4 minor league teams, one in Rookie, A, AA, and AAA -- they won't amount to squat. But if you do well, you can reap great rewards. There are tricks to this, but it does take time to figure it out. Each sim season takes about a month. It's slowed down a bit more these last couple of sim years, to maybe a month and a half. Every few days a handful of GMs, whoever is online, gets into an AIM chat (we do most of our trade talks, etc, via AIM for some reason), and the commish does slight updates while the sim runs, and the rest of us talk junk to each other. Everyone is pretty fun to deal with, but each also has a very particular style. Some are VERY MUCH better than others, and will rip you off in a deal if you aren't a decent negotiator. Trading is the life blood of the sim. As you would see in the transaction page, my team is very active on the trade front. I used to get ripped off pretty bad, but i've come around. You have a good chance of being competitive. Even if you don't know the game itself, if you understand baseball you have a shot. While most of us are competitive, others are lost. haha. But anyhow, check out the site, and feel free to PM me or the commish. You probably won't need to get too involved until 2018 starts, which is a week or so away. Be warned, it can be time consuming.
  22. Questionare for employment with the Chicago Cubs baseball club beyond the 2010 season (circle only one): 1) Have you ever owned a Hawaiian shirt? a) yes b) no
  23. Not that Hendry is worth keeping the draft guy formerly of the Blue Jays, but if (when) Hendry goes, does draft guy leave as well? I like draft guy. I don't like Hendry and that other asshat in the front office who wears Hawaiian shirts.
