    My dad is 55 and survived two bouts with cancer. He told me several times that he never thought the Sox would win it all before he died. He has since recovered from cancer, but he held on to that belief that they wouldn't win it. I just called him to congratulate him and I am more than a little jealous of how he is feeling right now. Congrats Dad, and Sox fans like you. Whatever happens to you in the future, you got your title. I hope I get to feel that way some day.

    And I for one am glad to see him back!!!! Welcome back Steve. It looks like it's gonna be a battle for sure. We can't even score 14 points so I'd take that spread every day of the week. I think it's gonna be too close to call. A lot of Vol fans hate The Ole Ball Coach, but I love him. Darth Visor is a heck of a nickname for him. Best of luck SCCubsfan!!! Same to you Dave. They ran an article in the paper here today discussing all the things that Spurrier has said about Fulmer and UT. There was one in there I hadn't seen. He was playing golf in early '97 at a charity golf event and Fulmer and Pat Summit were both in attendance. A pro at the course asked Spurrier if he was going to play his round with Fulmer. Spurrier said no, he'd rather play with Pat Summit because he only plays with people who win national championships. Classic. Its going to be a battle. I am just worried that your big uglies will push around in the trenches. For the first time in a long time I think we have an advantage at the skill positions.

    Personally I thought it was rather interesting to see how white the stands were in Houston. After years of seeing Yankees crowds, and two days of Comiskey crowds, that Houston crowd looked odd. Has there ever been a larger collection of 43 year old white people, outside a Republican convention that is? I doubt there's racism against players in that organization. But I wouldn't doubt if they weighed heavily the value of marketing a white star to the fan base. Ever been to a game at the Metrodome?

    How's it looking in SCville? Is the recruiting going well for you guys now that Spurrier is there? We went from dead in the water with our class under Holtz (at least how it was shaping up) to having a top 20 class. Spurrier is getting us in living rooms to which we would not have previously had access. Last season he recruited skill, this year we are focusing on the big uglies on both sides of the ball. We just got a commitment from two FL lineman, one of who picked us over LSU, Oklahoma, Florida, Florida State (you get the idea). Its going to take another couple of years. I am not predicting national championships, but I think before his contract is out we will have a Top 10 season or two.

    DJAXX and dave, where are you? The evil genius is back and your team is in trouble. Word on the street is that they aren't too happy with Phat Phil and his inability to win with a pretty sweet stable of talent. I guess they don't think a preseason top 5 team should be 3-3. I am looking forward to this one big time. You guys are favored by 14. What are your thoughts. Go [expletive]. Darth Visor is back in Knoxville!

    That is nothing. When my father-in-law played in the 84 World Series, my mother-in-law and the other wives had six Detroit police officers assigned to them at all times in Tiger Stadium. They weren't allowed to go to the bathroom without a police escort. After one of the road games, fans tried to tip over a bus carrying the parents and extended family of the Padres players.

    So he's Chicago's version of Ben Affleck and Boston. The only difference is that Affleck didn't profess to be a Red Sox fan, then say that he was done with them forever, show up at a Yankee playoff game in Yankee gear and then two years later when the Red Sox were back on top, show up at the Series back in their gear supporting them.

    I congratulate the White Sox for their success. But mostly, I am happy for Sox fans like my dad, who is approaching his 55th birthday and just celebrated seeing his first pennant since he was nine. He's forgotten more about baseball and its history than most folks here will ever learn. I know you guys that live in Chicago hate the young punk Sox fans that give you hell, but don't forget the legion of classy old heads that are celebrating like they are little kids. Maybe this is too personal for me to matter to anyone else. But I say, congrats Dad. Thanks for teaching me the game. I know how much this means to you. I hope your guys win the whole [expletive] thing.

    I used to think that Williams was a brutal GM, his lack of skills most prominently displayed in the atrocious Todd Ritchie trade. However, I think Kenny deserves a lot of credit for their success this season. They don't have a huge payroll, so he got creative. He took a chance on Contreras that paid off huge. He also took a big risk on the Podsednik/Lee deal that worked out for them as their lineup desperately needed an overhall. Finally, he brought in Iguchi who has been excellent for them. If you believe the multiple reports, he had a deal for Griffey as well. The guy may not always make great moves, but he is active and aggressive. Would I take him over Hendry, probably not, but that doesn't mean that he doesn't deserve credit for THIS season. The future will tell if he is a great GM or a GM who had a great season.

    Kam is a tough kid. I know one of his minor league coaches well and the kid just loves to play. He's a big boy but doesn't throw a lot of heat. Hopefully there will be no physical or mental reprecussions. He's one of my favorite young players.

    Yes, Raisin, my team took a natural ass whipping this weekend. Downright embarassing. Spurrier look homicidal in the first half and suicidal in the second. On his TV show yesterday, he basically threatened to start 11 new guys on defense, most of whom would be freshman. Our front seven was terrible. Its going to be a long year and USC is probably a four win team. The recruiting was strong this season and if we can keep recruiting top 15 classes, then 2-3 years from now, we should be more competitive. We'll see. At least the Steelers kicked ass yesterday, so I feel a little better. As for Dave Wannstedt, he was successful for a while in the NFL. His teams won 41 games in 4 years at one stretch. I admit that he was not successful over the long haul, but the capability was there. Furthermore, college football's golden boy, Pete Carroll was a good NFL coordinator and an AWFUL head coach. I predicted that Wanny could be successful (though not as much as Carroll) in that same mold. We'll see how he recruits. Turns out Tyler "f'in" Palko was wildly overrated.

    So the reason Murton doesn't play against righties is that he doesn't make enough money. Got it. Makes perfect sense now. :roll: I can't believe that Dusty is still playing Murton against Lefties. That is a huge step for him. With the playoffs on the line and after the Lawton trade Dusty could have easily created many excuses to bench Murton everyday and stay with Burnitz and Lawton. He also smacked Murton's throwing arm after complementing him. Way to build confidence in the kid. "Hey, you've been playing well dude, but your arm kinda sucks."

    I have seen Grady Little's name mentioned a ton as it relates to the manager position for next season. There appears to be mixed feelings about him on this board. What I hope this thread accomplishes is a decent discussion about whether or not he is a good fit and a good manager, but most importantly, WHY or WHY NOT. As I said I have seen a lot of "hire Little" or "don't hire Little", but not enough explanations and evidence. Thanks in advance. Proceed...

    I don't want to see Brenley or Little anywhere near the dugout for this season or any other. As for an interim manager, I would just go the old bench coach route and leave it at that, then I would try and go for someone I really wanted long term in the offseason. Before Oakland went on their tear, I really thought Ken Macha might become available, but that seems highly unlikely now.
