    I have to say, those are pretty funny shirts. Awww...that so sweet. It's good to see "The Barry's" who play for a team in San Fran, have found each other. That is so sweet. Interesting anecdote: A friend of my cousin knows a guy who works at a t-shirt kiosk in the mall in Scottsdale. One of the other emplyees sold them these shirts. The funny part is they tried to get shirts that said, "don't ask me, ask overpaid prima donna," and "don't ask me ask the over-rated King Kong head", but it wouldn't fit on the shirt.

    My guess is that the Cubs planned on settling for about 12.5, so they didn't want to offer that and then have to work on a new mid-point that was higher than that. They offered 11, they thought Z would offer about 14, and when he offered 15.5 the mid-point of that was simply unacceptable to them. Yeah I could see that but offering 12 or 12.5 in the arby would pretty much have won it hands down for the Cubs and IMO Z is going to get 16 or more anyway after this so why not just give him what he's worth right from the beginning? If I remember correctly, don't both sides put in blind bids so how could the Cubs know if 12.5 would even be a mid-point? But his point is they didn't want to go to the hearing at all. They wanted to settle at a midpoint, but weren't expecting the midpoint to be so high. I see, I'm surprised they didn't think it would be that high. True. Given the market the Cubs helped create, it should have been pretty clear he'd wanted Zito-type money.

    Why do you equate not trying to steal third with having a manager who sits around and does nothing? You coach, you know that there is more to game decisions than just "should I steal or not". I want a coach to worry about lefty/right match ups, defensive positioning, pinch hitting, etc...not to attempt a steal when it's likely harmful. But when you throw away a possible option you are limiting yourself and I just don't understand why you would make the opposing managers/teams job a lot easier. Again for the extremists....I'm not advocating to steal the whole time but to use it wisely and especially when you see a good matchup for success. I also don't understand the extremes of one way or another. You mix it up....maybe a slant one way or another but to say to steal all the time or to never steal is foolish to me. Any way to figure pitchers ERA with a basestealing threat on base vs their ERA without?

    I'm not so sure of that. Didn't Grudz get a vote or two for the NL MVP that year? So did Russ Ortiz (complete with 3.81 ERA), what's your point? I think he's just saying that if he got a vote for the MVP, he at least must have played well enough to justify the team playing him over a prospect who is waiting also, even if he didn't really completely deserve that MVP vote (I don't think anybody would really argue that he did. :D) It wasn't a first place vote. I think it was on the ballot where the guy voted all Cubs.

Look like Adidas spikes... looks more like miller, who, incidentally, looks a lot like kerry. on second inspection, yes, it probably is wood. he's lost a ton of weight as well. What's with the normal size calves on Prior?

    Agreed. Shorter deal at Zito money is acceptable. a 7, 8 year deal isn't. This still has the possibility of ending up like Wood, but IMO its a risk you have to take.

    The trouble with waiting is that the Cubs are unlikely to be out of it come July. It will be impossible from a PR perspective to deal Z in July if you're within 4 games of 1st. You deal him now, you can weather the storm of criticism if you end up contending. Call Bill Stoneman. Ask for Weaver, Kendrick and Adenhart. Call the Yankees and ask for Hughes, Sanchez + Tabata. Let them know the Angels are considering the other package. I don't think either team would bite, but if I didn't get the packages I'd simply hang on to Z and take my chances. Define "take my chances" 1. Go to arby and let him walk after 2007 or 2. Take my chances that I can get him to sign a long term near Zito deal

    I don't think panic about losing your best pitcher in over a decade is over-reaction, especially seeing as this demand is coming after some really questionable spending has been made. Had this demand come in November, he'd be locked up by now. But with the stupid contracts given to Lilly, Marquis, DeRosa, etc with almost no thought about locking up Z long term I think this is a perfect time to panic. It really is. If you look at the budget crunch that looms in 2009 it's hard not to attach some major urgency to keeping Z. This is a team that has to do whatever is necessary to win now. At last! A valid point. (valid, but not germane) Given the current budget 2009 could be a rough year to plug holes. With big commitments and a thin farm system assuming the budget doesn't increase significantly again, Hendry may have crippled the future. A Z extention to big bucks could be the final nail in the 2009 coffin (again assuming no SIGNIFICANT increase in budget) That doesn't mean Hendry will let Z walk after this year. No way no how. He'll extend him, and we better start praying now for 2009.

Really? honestly? Not as much as there should have been. Can anyone here justify giving 4/40 to Lilly or 3/21 to Marquis when you have a freaking future Cy Young winner on the staff entering the last year of his contract? Which was more important? Flushing money down the toilet by severely overpaying for mediocre talent or locking up one of the best pitchers in the league? Obviously, Hendry chose the former. It wasn't just Hendry. The whole market was nuts. That doesn't mean there isn't more money for Z.

    Collateral damage from giving away Ricky Nolasco for peanuts. Marquis most likely wouldn't be here if we still had Nolasco. Nolasco as a starter 9 10 4.96 22 119.2 Marshall 6 9 5.59 24 125.2 Why would nolasco have prvented them from bringing in Marquis? Nolasco would definitely have Marquis' spot in the rotation. Nolasco's ERA was somewhat skewed by a few meltdown games but the bulk of his starts were quite good. His season numbers will get a lot better if he can can cut down on those occasional disaster type games. More experience should help in that area. Not to sidetrack the issue, but this is silly. Nolasco would have been another one of the arms that was trotted out to audition, but at the end he would have been just another "not as impressive as Rich Hill" No way Hendry would have walked into this year with two rookies in the rotation. He's trying to prove that he's learned his lesson.
