  1. Pretty shortsighted of them to try to make the playoffs. Don't they know what that does to your draft position?
  2. Yes. There's no such thing as a "legitimate" contender. That's an entirely arbitrary, made-up category. We marginally increased the talent because we are in a situation where marginal wins have an increased chance of being the difference between making the playoffs and not, and that's the most important thing there is. More important than getting geeked up over moving up another spot in one of 15 different prospet rankings or whatever people were hoping for from trading Bellinger and Stroman.
  3. I don't really want any of our young SP to get starts? Ben Brown can't throw strikes, Jordan Wicks just got there and isn't exactly lighting it up.
  4. It's not a poker game. The analogy doesn't work. At all.
  5. Sure, he's better at baseball than the person he's replacing on the roster. But does that even matter?
  6. I'm pretty happy. I'm not a fan of the "ALL OR NOTHING YOU'RE EITHER CRAZY IN OR YOU'RE SELLING EVERYTHING FOR PROSPECTS" approach. Just play baseball. We cleaned up our future 40-man situation and got a small but tangible upgrade for our longish-shot playoff run.
  7. 1.5 years of control, 28, recent wrist injury, eye popping power outpaces his overall value. I would 100% take him and pay a pretty good chunk of prospect value for him, but I'm not drooling over him and I'm betting there's a team out there willing to pay more than I want to
  8. I'm not advocating for anyone specifically. If the cubs wanted to call up mervis tomorrow and give him the job, I would consider that fine. If they don't, that's fine too. Lotta guys can fill the back of an MLB roster equally as well as the front of a AAA one, and he's certainly one of them.
  9. It's definitely possible. There's a better chance I won't. A lot of people seem to spend a lot of time studying prospects without ever noticing the failure rate.
  10. There's only so many MLB pas to go around. We aren't obligated to give every late-round, overage, non-top-100 prospect a full season to figure it out
  11. And he was given an opportunity to seize it
  12. Missing key developmental years is never a point in a prospect's favor
  13. He might be something. He probably won't be. If a job happens to open up for him, maybe he'll seize the opportunity. That's true of a lot of guys. He's just not a "omg we have to make room to find what we have" kind of guy. He got a lot of attention and heat based on being there when fans were in the mood for a prospect to get hyped over, but he's just nothing special. Fortunately it seems like some more interesting talents are starting to filter into the upper minors.
  14. 1225 pro PAs for a post-fifth round pick who scouts don't seem to enamored with (sporadic appearances on the back of top 100 lists). It's just not the profile of a guy you have to move around major league pieces to make room for.
  15. "Wrist injury" is a massive red flag for power hitters exiting their prime
  16. That's where I am on him. I wouldn't turn him down but I'm not dying to have him.
  17. We all would. But you can only play one season at a time and this is the one in front of you
  18. This. There's this entire vibe that you have to be Real Contenders (tm) to be buyers, a threat to be the best team in the regular season. Something like the 2016 Cubs. That's just completely wrong. It's like saving your best relief pitchers for 4-run leads and refusing to use them in 1-run games. You buy when you are in the closest race between making and not making the playoffs. WTF is a "real contender" anyway? In a league with three 100-win teams including an absolutely bonkers 111-51 Dodgers team, you know who won the National League pennant? An 87-75 team that had a +62 run differential and went 34-47 against over .500 teams in the regular season.
  19. oh no how will our prospect ranking ever survive this.
  20. It actually would be funny to buy only to immediately go on a big losing streak,
