  1. Although holy carp, UZR loves Brett Gardner more than Ricketts loves Theo.
  2. You are expecting a lot of .822 OPS seasons out of Jackson? Anyway, yeah, you can get away with a weaker hitter in LF if you spend eleventy billion dollars on the best CF, 1b, and 3b money can buy. That doesn't make it right.
  3. Brett Jackson probably can't hit enough to justify a corner spot. maybe on a .500 team Let him play here for 10 years and you'll be distraught at the idea of him leaving, no matter how much money he wants.
  4. Other stats for Wood are pretty bad. ERA+ is only another version of looking at his ERA, not great. Fangraphs have him worth less than his contract. He's way down the list of relievers and was not pretty darn good. And Pena's decent season doesn't not equate to excellence. WAR and the dollar value that it assigns undervalues late-inning relievers. It's not a good metric to use for them. What other stats of Wood's are pretty bad? He struck out a ton of guys, gave up an average amount of home runs, and walked a few too many.
  5. Brett Jackson probably can't hit enough to justify a corner spot.
  6. I definitely think Milwaukee minus Fielder still looks like the best team in the division for 2012. They can make one more good run before the arbitration awards eat them alive.
  7. I got mine in, but after about 20 I was just tabbing and hitting the down key for a random fraction of a second. 50 is a lot.
  8. I wouldn't be surprised if Epstein already has the new manager in Chicago and ready to be announced. Or at least an unofficial agreement in place.
  9. No. 6 It's not been a great spot http://www.baseball-reference.com/draft/?overall_pick=6&draft_type=junreg& Since 1990, you have Greinke and Jeter and that's about it for impact players, though Ricky Romero is on his way. From 1979 to 1987, the 6th pick produced Kevin McReynolds, Andy Van Slyke, Barry Bonds and Gary Sheffield.
  10. I like Sveum for nothing but that I read he's big on defensive positioning and shifts.
  11. In other contexts I just use "Sandberg," but here it would be confusing.
  12. Sandberg's a raging anus for his HOF speech, for never diving for balls and for being a narcissistic curmudgeon who thinks his poo smells like fresh-cut Wrigley grass compared to the kids these days who spend more time standing on lawns than they do working on fundamentals. He's not a raging anus because of his slutty ex-wife, but that's what makes his slutty ex-wife hilarious.
  13. The Sandberg HOF speech transcript: http://www.cubsnet.com/node/526 It's a pretty nauseauting self-wank manifesto. The part where he takes a shot at a current Cubs player just to make himself look better: The partwhere he throws a former teammate under the bus for faking injuries, but is so self-absorbed he doesn't realize he's not just telling a funny joke:
  14. Slamming Sandberg is my way of expressing the fact that I think he's a raging anus.
  15. He's been a raging anus since the day he retired (the real one, not the quitting on the team one), and he gets a humongous pass for the exact sorts of things that Hispanic players get constantly media railroaded for.
  16. The repeated cuckolding incidents tells you what Sandberg's teammates really thought of him.
  17. You don't have to like a player just because he was good and you were a child during his playing days. I promise.
  18. So you have arguably the greatest second baseman of all time that played for our team, made the HOF, played the game as hard as anyone and yet all you do is blast the guy? He is easily on the top 10 list of all time Cubs players and you hate this guy? Wow! You don't have to like a player just because he is good and white. I promise.
  19. It's closer than you think. Carlos Zambrano: 3.6 bWAR per full season for his career Ryne Sandberg: 4.1 bWAR per full season for his career
  20. Who? Sveum, Maddux, and Francona i'd assume. I forget, but was there a source for Sveum's name being out there or were people just talking about them? SI's Heyman.
  21. Fair enough. Zambrano just quit on his team. He never dogged it to protect his personal stats. So we can probably call it a slight win for Zambrano.
  22. So we agree: Ryne Sandberg and Carlos Zambrano should be evaluated similarly as teammates.
  23. I can't read his mind, but I always got the impression it was that one. The guy practically treated his fielding percentage the way this board treats pictures of Theo Epstein standing outside Wrigley.
  24. That iPad advertisement disguised as an article made me really want a manager who is very aggressive with defensive positioning and shifts.
