  1. And they don't improve as pitchers.
  2. Because if we're supposed to be building asset value, then we need to be taking guys like them and getting them established in the major leagues. If all they do is pitch in AAA, they build no trade value and don't improve as pitchers.
  3. Not even a little. They are bent on getting him some more AAA time. If nothing else, to save a year of service time.
  4. That seems to be the most interesting story of the spring. We've still got at least seven legitimate starting candidates, so two guys are going to be left out, now that Samardzija starting seems to be a serious thing. Personally, if nothing changes by April, I think we need to find a taker for Dempster for whatever we can get. I know we want veterans to set good examples and all that, but I'd hate to see Wood, Volstad or Samardzija not get a chance to establish themselves right away.
  5. Apparently, Sveum doesn't like to pinch the middle infield in DP situations, preferring the optimal alignment to minimize giving up a hit. I have no idea if that's better or not than the conventional wisdom, but I like that he thinks about stuff like that.
  6. Has anyone checked on Isringhausen, Pulsipher and Wilson lately? I haven't, but I remember they were supposed to be pretty good.
  7. Maybe if you loved your son enough you'd pony up for the tickets.
  8. I hope someday they find a scientific way to measure how much someone loves a team, and distribute tickets based on it. Then I hope all the people who moan about ticket prices find out they are too low on the loyalty scale to get tickets.
  9. That's got to be lazy reporting. If he's 20 and not 19 then I guess Daytona seems a bit more likely than before, but that's about it. I really, really want to hear where the Cubs have him at for velocity.
  10. As I mentioned in the other thread, the TV gun had Garza working 85-89. I hope it was a slow gun. I don't recall where it had Lilly.
  11. I hope the tv gun is slow, because it had Garza working 85 to 89.
  12. I really hope Spring Training performance has virtually nothing to do with their decisions. Well that's a faint hope. Ideally you'd like that, but with this many arms competing for 1-2 spots, I'm not sure how you could expect ST performance wouldn't have some bearing. Maybe not the numbers, but how they're throwing for sure. My hope would be that they already have their five in mind, and the other couple of guys are only there in case someone gets hurt or comes out throwing completely different stuff than they have in the past (gained/lost velocity or something).
  13. Looking forward to seeing Rizzo. In yesterday's at-bat, he kinda reminded me of a left-handed Derrek Lee. His swing and miss on a breaking ball was so ugly that you wondered how he ever made contact, then he squared up on a ball really nicely.
  14. I really hope Spring Training performance has virtually nothing to do with their decisions.
  15. I'd really hate to waste Travis Wood or even Volstad in the minors while Dempster and Maholm soak up starts.
  16. Just some random spring training thoughts. The only really vaguely important thing that has happened so far is that DeJesus is announced as the leadoff hitter. Lineups are overrated, blah blah blah, but that's a solid choice. I really have to wonder if a trade is upcoming in the rotation. It looks like Shark the Starter may have some legitimacy to it, and I'm really worried about a guy like Wood or Volstad being left out of the rotation.
  17. This times 100. The Cubs have upside and are at least as good as last year's team even without that upside.
  18. Sure. It's baseball. All you need is about 8 guys to have seasons 1-1.5 WAR better than you expect, and then get about 5-7 extra wins from pythagorean variance and such. It's a 100-1 shot, but it can happen.
  19. AJ Burnett opened some eyes in Pirates camp. Not what you think though.
  20. With an extra playoff spot, 15 games back may be a lot further than it was in recent years.
  21. You forgot the part where he rolls around in a pit of unearned money. He also sits down in left field, refusing to field any balls that aren't hit directly to him.
  22. Vitters and Torreyes take huge steps forward. Vitters becomes a projected big league regular for 2013, and Torreyes becomes a top-100 prospect. Junior Lake falters and nobody notices because he's too fun to watch play to worry about piddling things like actual production. Vogelbach crushes A but struggles with Daytona in the second half.
  23. More teams in the playoffs = more teams in contention = fewer teams looking to sell and more teams looking to buy = sellers' market. Good for the Cubs.
