Exactly. In the abstract, 9 years / $30 million would be crazy for any draft pick not named Strasburg or Harper. But given the impending rule change, Soler's status as an international FA, and the restrictions on taking advantage of efficiencies in the Rule 4 draft, 9 years / $30 million is understandable. If draft picks were allowed to negotiate on the open market, I don't think $30 million would seem so crazy. The draft is, first and foremost, designed to artificially hold down the price of amateur talent.

I've heard he has very good plate discipline for his age. Hit tool (contact) still has questions....and we know about the power. The only numbers i've ever seen on him was for the Cuban national team, maybe 2 years ago? I'm fairly certain his numbers were along the lines of .300/.500/.500. http://baseballprospectnation.com/2012/02/14/scouting-report-jorge-soler-of/ Those current grades almost make him a useful major leaguer right now.

I asked this one earlier, but I didn't see a response...any idea when any or all of these 3 project to be in Daytona? Just guesses, but I'd say Soler early 2013, Baez early 2013, Almora end 2013/early 2014.

9/30? After all the spiraling crazytalk in the last few days, I had prepared myself to be excited about 6/40 with free agency at the end.

Whether or not you did it right depends on what you were going for, I guess. But I'd put him at No. 3, behind Almora but ahead of Baez, personally.

I haven't been this excited since the Marshall trade. This is the Theo Epstein I wanted in charge of the Cubs. The guy who turned the AL East into an arms race and never, ever had enough talent.

Well, I can't deny that this year's .333 team is taking it *way* better than some of the awful teams in the past. And Bryan LaHair looks like a man who does *not* take [expletive] from boom boxes unless he is okay with it.

This statement has just as much truth towards it. Except I'm not sure how barley fits in. They aren't exactly equivalent. I mean, yes, you could categorize both teams bids under "rumors," but I think some rumors are a lot stronger and more credible than others.

Objectively, I know there's always an opportunity cost. But honestly, you are right, I'm going to be a little annoyed if he signs somewhere else at any price.

That would be so awesome. I go to check the pairing sheet at the St. Louis Premiere and Amateur. Second round, Board 2, Kyle Mayhugh (white) vs. Theo Epstein (black). I would squee. And you just know he's a Najdorf player.

Can you beat that? if I tell you I'll do 48, but it requires you to sign right now, will you? *breaks character* And there you have it. You have to draw a line at what you think the player is worth. You can't just say "We'll go over whatever anyone else bids." It doesn't work as a matter of practice.

Soler is a pure RFer and Jackson is a pure CFer.

A) Already in place, so not bought. B) Coming off his best minor league season by far, so not low. So probably doesn't belong in a discussion of buy-low reclamation projects.

I don't think they failed at all. I just think they succeeded at the wrong thing. They decided they wanted to blow off the year. They proceeded to gut the team where they could and fill it with no-cost replacements and cheap guys they thought they could deal at the deadline. They succeeded wildly.

"The Yankees offered a billion dollars over 3 years" That kind of bidding doesn't work when actually calling the Yankees up and asking would be collusion. It doesn't necessarily have to be collusion if there is simply a mutual understanding that the Cubs will beat any offer. They could just say, "Soler wants to be a Cub and the Yankees offered $40 Million, so give us $44 million and he is yours." If it really is true that Epstein wants Soler at all costs, then anything less than offering the Cubs a chance to beat any offer would be leaving money on the table. Okay, you be the Cubs and I'll be Soler's agent. "There's another team bidding $40 million. Do you want to go up to $44?"

Let me try to take this thread in a slightly more productive direction with a question; Has this season's results to date changed anyone's opinion of the value in trying to buy low on guys with either good results in their past or good pedigrees? It seems like only David DeJesus and Shawn Camp are the only hits so far.

$40 million seems like too much unless we have an incredible scouting read on him that says he's getting close to MLB ready. You are really cutting away at the risk:reward ratios at that point. Last year of uncapped spending with a ton of money unspent from this year. I personally don't care if they spend 40M. It looks like that money is just going to go unspent if they don't get Soler. I doubt it just disappears into the ether or Tom Ricketts' pockets. Or at least I hope not. There have to be better opportunities. If $40 million doesn't make you blink, what would?

This. A lot of people cheering wildly for the No. 1 draft pick don't seem to realize that the worst record in the league will probably have to come with disappointing performances from guys like Rizzo or Samardzija.
