  1. Allegedly not. But it is kind of weird. I think he's a bit overrated, but he should make for some nice depth and I like having him more than not having him.
  2. All right, I'm sold. Booting Watkins, adding Torreyes.
  3. Cabrera Szczur Watkins Still too early for last year's drafted arms. You draft three of those guys in the supplemental-third range with the hope that one emerges a few years later, and it's too early to know which one of them will be that guy. I'm very disappointed that Torreyes probably doesn't deserve to be in the top-15 at this point.
  4. Theo can crocodile mouth Dayton all he wants, but the Rays MO will remain the same: Ask for something completely and utterly ridiculous and hold to it until someone caves.
  5. David Price will go great with our Albert Pujols and Cole Hamels from the last two offseasons.
  6. If Garza is healthy and has a 2011ish season (obviously a huge if), I think $100 million is very much in his ballpark. He'd be a slightly better, slightly less reliable Anibal Sanchez at that point, but he'd be in a market with even less starting pitching and more money.
  7. Relatively speaking, sure. I think if you are in need of a cheap outfielder who can provide you with not completely horrid production, he's a fine choice. But it's not flip-flopping to change your mind after an entire year of new data.
  8. Your fantasy is an 84 win team? From where we are right now and what's available right now, yes.
  9. I don't care about the price. If we don't spend it on Jackson, we're just going to let it sit there and accrue interest or something for another year. Assuming options are picked up, here's the list of worthwhile starting pitcher free agents pre-2014: Matt Garza Phil Hughes Josh Johnson Adam Wainwright After that, you're down into the Harens and Maholms of the world. Just assume that Hughes and Johnson will be extended in the next 10 months and that Wainwright and Garza will go to whichever team has a new cable deal.
  10. ABTY's the guy who kind of has general industry sources. It's not necessarily tied to Cubs directly, but he does an awesome job of relaying what the general "baseball insider" gossip is. He also said some people think that the way they Cubs are acting is consistent with being worried about Garza's rehab.
  11. Want want want want want. I'm having a fantasy that the real Theo Epstein just crashes in all of a sudden and makes some suave observation about how he's late but it's cool. We get Jackson, Bourn and do some awesome Rizzo-style trade and have an 84-win team going into the season.
  12. We need this. The injection of stability into the medium-term rotation would be huge, and after Jackson there's not really any other options forthcoming.
  13. Edwin Jackson apparently down to Cubs and Rangers according to some national reporter. From a PSD insidery guy:
  14. We probably should get a little bit more out of 1b this season, but another problem may be that unlike last year, we have absolutely no depth at the position. Maybe that changes in the next few months, or maybe we get lucky and don't need it.
  15. Want. MLBTraderumors was reporting yesterday that the Cubs had called the Tigers but the teams didn't have a "fit" for such a trade.
  16. Most of the difference between Rizzo and LaHair last season in terms of fWAR was defense and baserunning.
  17. It's 19-19 as I type. Just call them each t-10 and move on.
  18. Yes, it sucks to have 22 year olds that put up a .859 OPS in AAA. If that was an accomplishment it would be a meaningful statement. But an 859 in the PCL is not an accomplishment, especially by a guy who can't hack 3B. It's not like we're comparing him to people who have racked up accomplishments at this point. His competition in this run-off is a guy whose accomplishments are: 1) 11 innings in short-season ball 2) Being picked at No. 43 overall (a spot in the draft order that has produced just three players in 47 years with a career bWAR of 5 or higher.) Here is the full list of players who were in the PCL at 22 or younger who posted an .800 OPS or better last season (min. 143 ABs because that's what BR has it set at for some reason): Wil Myers Anthony Rizzo Josh Vitters
  19. Yes, it sucks to have 22 year olds that put up a .859 OPS in AAA. you very easily looked past the 22 year old Brett Jackson that put up a .939 OPS in AAA, presumably because you approached his situation with a little more objectivity Where did he vote Brett Jackson? He ended up pretty high.
  20. Existential horror as they realize only death can erase what they've seen.
  21. No to both of these things. Scouting reports say that, not the stats. I tend to pay attention to that at the minor league level. My scouting report says that his swing makes babies and menstruating women burst into convulsing, sobbing tears.
  22. So ... you'll be showing me that study that shows that consistency is better than equivalent inconsistency any minute now?
  23. No to both of these things.
