  1. That's an annoying loss. There were easily half-a-dozen guys on the 40-man worse than him.
  2. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/can-carlos-villanueva-start-effectively/
  3. Yeah. I don't want to make this a major complaint, because I'm kind of intrigued by what they are doing, but it seems kind of odd to just triple-down on pitching and make Nate Schierholtz your outfielder. Still plenty of time, though.
  4. So amidst all the legitimate celebration, the question has to be asked: Why didn't we make any of these signings last offseason?
  5. Dear lord. I may not count, but can I at least "not count" for the things I actually say and not the exact opposite?
  6. We're a little better than we were last year. But yeah, I can see the point that we were probably not terrible on paper heading into last year either. But it's just hard for us to remember that sometimes there's positive variance, too. Not every season ends with half the rotation traded or on the DL.
  7. They stopped making Harry Potter books, what else was there to do? Raise your kid I just gone done wrestling a 50-pound, barely verbal toddler through a screaming, absolutely hysterical 10-minute diaper change that left him shaking and sobbing, then had to hold his arms down for five minutes to keep him from hitting himself until he calmed down. I've earned a little Cubs optimism time.

  9. 10% - Maybe they'll make some amazing trade for an OF and a 3b and we'll be a playoff team! 80% - All right! This is what I expected to see from these guys. 10% - They better $@@#$ not turn around and trade Soriano and Marmol and give their jobs to Campana and Bowden.
  10. GRB, I know you're reading this apparently. Because I was reading to see if you were reading this. Or something. Anyway, two things: 1) You guys really need to look at how many losses the Cubs racked up with sub-replacement starting pitching last season. Not just below-average. Sub-replacement. 2) I'm trying to WAG a percentage chance that the Cubs finish ahead of the Cardinals in the standings next year. I'm thinking like 10-20%.
  11. They are so [animal][expletive]ing smart when they want to be. I'm still a little nervous they'll do something like trade Soriano without getting an OF in return and be like "LOL DeJeus/Campana/Schierholtz!" But I'm about 90% on board right now. This is *exactly* what needed to be done.
  12. I'm going to tempt fate and assume that Jackson really is as done as it seems. It's not as big of an upgrade as it seems like it should be, because we're just running out of pitchers to slot in. The upside is that it severely limits our downside. I don't think it pushes up the median projection a ton, but it really scrunches up the tail of the bell curve (I'm probably not making any sense at this point, but I know what I mean).
  13. I'd do it for Headley. But I don't think the Padres would.
  14. Turning a young, cost-controlled starter into the second lefty out of the pen seems a little wasteful.
  15. Cano, Elsburry, Garza, Hughes are all that really stands out to me.
  16. I'm going to be naive and believe this is really about to get done. It's no "sign Pujols and a SP and win right away," but "hoover up all the average starting pitching and just overload the roster with it" has some sort of weird, undefined quality of ambition that's more in line with what I expected from this front office.
  17. Wade's peripherals have been really good this year. I'm pretty intrigued by him and surprised all he got was a minor league deal.
  18. I guess in theory it could help force other teams to mix players in and out of the lineup and break up their hitting rhythm. But really, no.
  19. Make sure it's reported by someone other than Muskat that he's there.
  20. I'm not even convinced he's better than Wood, let alone Feldman. It'd be odd if we promised him a rotation spot, but that's what he supposedly wanted to sign.
