  1. They spent a ton of money on free agents last offseason. They aren't going to just shut down this year with more payroll space cleared and a better base of players in place. What he's saying is literally true but meaningless. If the Cubs were to field a team for 2014 with what they already have in place, it'd cost about $75m after arbitration raises. But they aren't going to do that. Even without getting in on the pick-tied free agents at the top of the market (and we managed to give Edwin Jackson 4/$52 last offseason without giving out a pick), we'll raid the mid-level, short-term shelf for an outfielder, a starting pitcher, a backup catcher, and at least one reliever. That'd take us up to $90m.
  2. Didn't get swept in a four-game series with the Brewers! *yes*!
  3. Is he really that much more of a prospect than Vitters anymore? I guess, maybe, because there's always the hope that he magically turns back into what he used to be. But you could make an argument for Vitters. Meanwhile, Baez is 14th in the Southern League in HRs despite missing the first 85 games of the league's season.
  4. Who cares? Baseball players are not lines in a stock portfolio. The name of the game isn't to sell them at their peak value. It's to use them to help you win baseball games.
  5. OK, I'm seriously beginning to mentally pencil in some late-2014 Baez contributions at the MLB level.
  6. So your theory is that the Cubs got stuck holding on to Schierholtz with nobody offering anything, in a market where Hairston and Soriano netted interesting pitching prospects?
  7. Like who? What's wrong with his .283 .331 .554 .885 line against RH pitchers? He's been exactly what they were hoping they'd be: a good platoon player. And while people like to throw out "platoon player" as a perjorative, it's not as easy as they seem to think to find the dominant half of a platoon.
  8. For the life of me, I can't recall what we even gave up *goes from memory* A couple of pitching prospects, iirc. Justin Jones and someone named Felix something? And we got back Murton as well. *looks it up* Francis. Francis Beltran, Justin Jones, Brendan Harris (the 3b prospect that once got a Pujols comp from BP) and Alex Gonzalez (I'd forgotten we gave up our SS).
  9. It was constantly being reported that it might be Clement for Garciaparra, to the point where when we heard we were getting Garciaparra, Clement thought he had been dealt.
  10. Oh, I definitely am. Russell, Barney, Schierholtz, DeJesus, Villanueva all in line to be coming back. Still could be moved, but this was by far the most likely "dump them for prospects" moment. Post 2011 offseason, the Cubs front office is on a remarkable streak of doing exactly what I hoped for.
  11. The Garza things sounds like one of those "bored reporter" stories. Ranger source: We're listening on anybody, open to anything that helps our team win. Reporter: Really? Anyone? Even Garza? Ranger source: Sure, in theory. Reporter runs off to write "Garza may be back on trading block!" story.
  12. Olt is about 400 more PAs of this from being in DFA territory, and Bryant hasn't proven he can stick at 3b yet.

  14. He's a pitcher. They ALL have downside. Including Shark on a longterm deal. Not to mention, no one's condoning a one for one swap. Samardzija's outside the injury nexus and doesn't need a longterm deal anytime soon.
  15. The guy is walking 4.5/9 in AA. I don't see that as particularly likely.
  16. You'll never get the Most Prospects On The Top 100 List achievement ring with that attitude.
  17. I don't really want the Pirates to go on a deep playoff run and get the extra revenue that comes with it. There was a huge debate down here in the last couple of years about the Cards getting a bunch of extra revenue from playoff games and that whole thing was debunked I believe. It pretty much came down to having to make it to the World Series for the money to become remotely significant and even then it was a huge, go out and sign all the players amount (or really even one significant contract). http://bizofbaseball.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=5471:mlb-postseason-clubs-make-extas-money-at-the-gate-but-depends-on-length-of-series&catid=26:editorials&Itemid=39 It's a couple of million per home game, give or take. $10 million extra in the hands of the Cardinals isn't ideal, but they are going to be awesome anyway and aren't that strapped for cash. $10m extra in the hands of the Pirates could help them put extend their window by a year.

  19. As much as that was a problem pre the Strop/Guerrier moves, the offense has been a MUCH bigger problem in the more recent stretches of failure. Svuem not knowing how to manage a bullpen automatically makes the pen worse, too. During which recent stretch of failure? Because we were doing well the past two weeks and the bullpen has been rivaling it's early April stretch of awful this series.
  20. I can't believe I let this team sucker me into caring about it for a few days. I'm not even mad at them. That is totally on me.
  21. "I don't know who is going to play X" is not the same as "they can't possibly get anybody good to play X."
