  1. The pen is really shaping up to be strong. Let's hope they don't get over-worked too early. I'm much more optimistic about this team than I was this winter. I think they will struggle mightily to score runs, but I think they will be in most ball games. The starting pitching is awfully blah, and the offense is a serious challenger for the worst in the league. I want to believe, but it's hard.
  2. Kalish, McDonald, Coghlan, maybe Vitters or Wells.
  3. I'm tired of all the futzing about trying to game trade value. Junior Lake sucks and isn't one of our five best outfielders. If we don't take him north, I'll be impressed.
  4. Weren't you previously of the (sensible) opinion that ST performance is meaningless? I was saying this before ST started. But extreme K-rates are the only ST stat that shows some correlation to real stats.
  5. Is there something you've seen that indicates that might be happening? I haven't really noticed any allusions to Lake going to Iowa, but I haven't been reading every article either. Absolutely nothing that makes me think it's a possibility.
  6. Let me reiterate how impressed I will be with this management if they have the nerve to send Junior Lake down before the season starts.
  7. Patterson was more hyped than any of the four except maybe tied with Baez. Pie was probably even with Soler/Almora.
  8. If the Cubs believe that Olt is "fixed" and is a potential long term Major League player, is there any chance they send him back to AAA for a few months so he doesn't accumulate the service time? He would only need to stay down a few more weeks than Baez. With his age and the organizational depth at 3B, I don't expect they would send him to AAA if they believe he is ready, but I wouldn't put it past this front office to want to buy themselves another year. He's got 63 days of service time already. You'd have to hold him down half the year.
  9. Yeah...I'm starting to wonder if this is what it looks like right before your minor league system produces a couple of superstars and you get really good really fast. It's [expletive] nuts. Seems like everyday someone is doing something insane. I love the spring training fantasy highs. It's so easy to believe when there's no meritocracy ruthlessly crushing you.
  10. Roberts is probably the easiest cut out of that final five. So basically three spots for Olt, Bonifacio, Kalish, Murphy if everyone is still healthy in two weeks.
  11. Fortunately these putzes are pretty deep in the minority. http://www.forbes.com/sites/stevensalzberg/2012/07/23/anti-vaccine-movement-causes-the-worst-whooping-cough-epidemic-in-70-years/ http://jennymccarthybodycount.com/Anti-Vaccine_Body_Count/Home.html That second link is awful. Just because they are right in the big picture doesn't mean their argument/presentation isn't terrible.
  12. I dont get the Szczur to AAA thing Raisin. I think he could use a bit more time in AA, and it seems the OF is set in Iowa with Kalish/Vitters/Jackson. Kalish seems like he's making the MLB team.
  13. I had no idea Choi was in the HR Derby. Youtube confirms:
  14. Came up empty on 34% of his swings.
  15. I don't need to like or respect athletes to root for them.
  16. Me too. My girlfriend from Canada could vouch for me she comes to visit next month.
  17. If we're all wrong about Lake and he has a great year, fine. But if this team had the balls to say "Thanks for your hot streak last year, but we don't think you're one of our five best outfielders to go north with" I would be insanely impressed.
  18. Well, the outfield has some horrorshow potential. We still don't know who the fifth outfielder is, and Lake has the potential to be the horrific bench guy except starting. If we'd signed like one good outfielder this offseason, we'd be a .500 team.
  19. Two small things that have happened in ST that I like: 1) We're still pretty healthy as far as Opening Day projection goes 2) Bonifacio solves the infield depth problem that I wasn't happy with. If we stipulate that Olt is back to 2012 levels and Baez is up by June 1, then I'd project 78 wins without a firesale.
  20. If Mike Olt can see and hit, then they may to have to do some scrambling to successfully tank this season.
  21. 50/50. They're giving him every opportunity and then some. Needs to slow down the swing-and-miss, especially against righties.
  22. Outside of death or debilitating injury, the absolute floor has to be like Pedro Alvarez.
  23. From 6-16 to 6-19 at AAA Round Rock, he went 6-for-17 with 2 2b, 3 HR, 2 BB for a slash line of 353/421/1.000 1.421 OPS. Nope, not 21 PA. [-( Not going to go back and look, but presuming he went 0-for-2 in the adjoining PAs, that gives him a 315/381/895 line for a 1.376 OPS for 21 PAs.
  24. Curveballs tend to jump a little out of the hand. And you don't usually see hanging sliders that high. I'm guessing change-up.
