There's been at least one scouting report this offseason that said it was less than excellent. There will be more in the coming years as the low-minors euphoria wears off.

I'm fine with these types of disciplinary moves happening in the minors, but I really wish they wouldn't be reported. But I guess that's his job. I'm glad they're reported, but I imagine the coaches aren't. They usually hide it. -

I kind of brought it up when goony compared Almora to Vitters...and I knew what Kyle's response would be so I kind of brought that up too. You did a very nice job of preemptively turning this into an argument about me. Nice deflective tactic, and it workd.

His defense is probably some value of "good."

You'll just pick out whichever of all those writers says the best thing, and then repeat it endlessly until it seems like consensus.

Proof that every minor leaguer's defense is overrated? A lifetime of experience reading breathless reports on "This guy could be a plus-plus defender right now even though he's still in A-ball" and then he comes up and gacks balls all over the place.

And if Almora had Vitters' power, he'd be a much better prospect. But he doesn't. And yeah, Almora's defense is almost certainly being overrated. Every minor leaguer's is.

It's more than enough when you've also inherited Samardzija, Castro, Marshall, Garza at the MLB level. And probably a few more guys that could still be useful now. This team is bad because Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer have done a miserable job adding good baseball players to the roster, not because of what they inherited or even because of the payroll. *That's* the product we're seeing right now.

We reward them for defensive mistakes, too. Bad positioning, falling down before they touch the ball, mistakes on tough plays.
