  1. It's important to remember that Kyle does not understand math and he is wrong. "outlier" is not a magic word that means "that didn't happen so we won't count it." The entire reason run differential is predictive is the frequency and ratio of blowouts for/against tells you more about a team than their performance in close games.
  2. I still love how the Philadelphia guy was the only one who realized he scored:
  3. "outlier" games don't skew run differential. That's what makes it work.
  4. Sportscenter is an advertising vehicle for ESPN's other programming.
  5. He's crossing the line from slightly annoying to quite exciting right now.
  6. The two most satisfying non-finals series wins were the second time we beat Vancouver and the second time we beat Minnesota. Vancouver especially because they wanted it so bad and that was the peak of their window and we ended their season the *exact* same way we did the year before, as if nothing they had done in the last year had changed anything.
  7. From the non-Cup Winner category, this is still my favorite:
  8. @DownGoesBrown · 36m The next NHL all-star skills competition will feature Superman dressing up like Patrick Kane.
  9. Lost game 7 to Vancouver and 6 to Phoenix. That one only applies to when the series has been 2-2.
  10. Hawks have won 13 straight games 5, 6 or 7.
  11. We're talking about everyone else's hypocrisy here and not mine.
  12. Yes. This. the 17 seconds thing is a pretty fantastic replay over and over and over whenever you want it, though, too. you pay for the blowouts with memories. 17 seconds was so great, but it'll always be just a little behind "Nobody knows where the puck is ... it's in the back of the net!" for me.
  13. This is one of those where you have to just stop and appreciate what is happening. The last two Cup winners are battling it out in an utterly epic 7-game conference final. This is hockey history and it involves the same team that used to need Arnason/Bell/Calder to be an important line.
  14. I'm gonna be a total $#%#@! and show up on HFboards for the first time in a week.
  15. Momentum exists now and we have it.
  16. And suddenly the Blackhawks are in favored position. Unbelievable.
  17. Just collapse in front of the net and don't let anything through. Ice it if you have do, don't try to skate it out.
  18. Ha! Awesome. Please, explain what is so "aggressively stupid" about not feeling better about the Cubs' pythag variance? I don't think it's aggressively stupid, but I'd rather criticize them for putting together a 79-win team or whatever the pythagorean says they should be. It's not like that's a victory of some sort.
  19. The better prospect is the better prospect. They took the worse prospect.
  20. If it's in our zone in the last 30 seconds with solid possession for LA, just assume it's tied and start thinking about OT.
  21. Seriously, Kane and Saad are just like in EA NHL 94 when I'd avoid all the good moves for most of the game to pretend like it was close, then when I was losing in the third period I'd say "screw it" and score at will.
  22. *Sigh* I REALLY hate the "only the Cobs" stuff, but it just feels like it has been seriously piling up in the last few years. Think about the playoff losing streak, too. Reasonably talented teams suddenly losing nine in a row by a million runs.
  23. It definitely is. Actually, I think Brett showed that over the last 20 years we've been pretty amazingly bad at keeping up with Pythagorean.
  24. Holy crap that whole line just decided "[expletive] this, we're scoring." Do that again please.
