  1. If only they had one of the deepest and highest-rated farm systems in the game. Then maybe they'd be in position to replenish that depth...
  2. I'm not sure there's been a player in baseball history more Javy than Javy.
  3. It's a stretch to call him a star. And he was the only guy to trade and potentially get back a haul. The haul wasn't there, other teams knew the Hawks were against the cap. If Stan found a deal I'm sure he would have been gone. But that being said the cap crunch coming Im glad they kept Sharp for another Cup run. Probably wont make a serious run again until 2018. If they had wanted to trade Sharp, the haul was there. They've proven time and again that the "teams will know they are up against the cap" theory is silly. As long as you have two interested teams in a player, you have plenty of leverage.
  4. Trying is scary because it carries with it the possibility of failure. Basking in the glow of perpetual but vaguely defined progress is more fun.
  5. Blowout games where the key players stop trying are completely killing me.
  6. Many on NSBB would have gone he same route (except for Kyle) Almost nobody here wanted this path until they took it. Except for the visionary davearm. But that's over now. We're about to be awesome.
  7. OK, this guy is pretty damn cool.
  8. I just remember wanting to let Ramirez walk because I assumed the savings would be spent on other good MLB players.
  9. Would you rather have our IFA class or a normal IFA class and the ability to go nuts on that guy?
  10. Just the opposite. I was super skeptical of it when it first started coming out and now I feel dumb.
  11. It's been that way for an offseason or two.
  12. I don't think this signals a Wood trade. It's pitching. Anything short of too much depth is not enough.
  13. We should have paid a guy $100k to teach Renteria to manage like Maddon.
  14. Maddon's agent is on our side in this one. It's not like he's some independent, impartial observer. And MLB can confirm that the Cubs asked for permission to talk to him formally, but that doesn't disprove that they had previous contact. But agreed, it doesn't matter because it's not going anywhere. Everybody tampers all the time and nobody can ever prove it so it doesn't matter.
  15. Nothing's going to happen. Tampering never goes anywhere. It would barely be a story if people weren't bored. But the fact that the Cubs have a version of events doesn't end it.
  16. Uh, he's not wrong. Not that it matters. He's not wrong either.
  17. Guys they *say* they didn't do it! Tampa will totally drop it now.
  18. And that should end the tampering discussion. Tampering won't get anywhere, but the people accused denying it won't end the discussion. Um...that's more than a simple denial. If they got permission from the commish's office, it will, then Tampa has no case. What if Tampa alleges that there was contact before that official contact? Right back where we started: they say/we say.
  19. And that should end the tampering discussion. Tampering won't get anywhere, but the people accused denying it won't end the discussion.
  20. Teams can talk to free agents now. They can't sign them for five days after the WS ends, so ... Tuesday?
  21. Managers still don't matter that much, but every time Epstein does something like this (annoy the rest of baseball while paying top dollar to make sure the Cubs get the best of something), I get a little glimmer that maybe the version of him that was active in Boston could show up permanently.
  22. Bulls just won the Eastern Conference by the rarely invoked Early Season Daisy Chain rule.
