  1. Are ... are the Cubs the best team in town?
  2. I hate the term "utility guy" so much. It covers too wide a range. Alcantara is one of our best starting 8, just like Valbuena was. Being versatile enough to play multiple positions within that framework doesn't devalue him.
  3. Wood traded, Wada to the pen, everyone else cut or sent down as needed.
  4. Two weeks of Mike Trout over a replacement level CF isn't quite worth a full win. And Kris Bryant, bless his heart, isn't Mike Trout. I am all about squeezing out tiny edges, but there's just nothing to this. You just end up paying dozens of millions of dollars for half a win, at best.
  5. Nobody really knows. It's possible, but it'd be hard to put a percentage on it.
  6. Even though I understand the baseball reasons for the move and I like any small upgrade, I hate this trade because it means I'm going to have to hear people speak positively about giving Olt a chance for the next three months.
  7. Now I'm having that fantasy again where Bryant has a Longoria-like rookie year and we're the 2008 Devil Rays.
  8. how is Russell a question mark but not Castro, who was close to being the worst player in baseball two years ago? i like both players, but that logic is pretty silly Because one has 3,186 PAs in the majors for a total of 11.2 fWAR and the other has 13 PAs of .154 OPS above AA.
  9. Irrational prediction: Edwin Jackson comes out of SP with the 5th starter job, and the combination of long-overdue regression to the mean and magic pitch-framing leads him to a useful season.
  10. Isn't it more like 6 weeks? Nope. It's roughly 10 days for a year of control. It used to be about six weeks for super-2, but now it's more like half a year.
  11. Fancy way of saying we are terrible at both positions. Nailed it.
  12. I haven't been enamored with any specific move, but I can't say that they didn't have a solid offseason. They checked all the boxes that needed to be checked. [x] TOR pitcher [x] Second SP [x] Backup catcher [x] Middle infield depth [x] A starting-quality position player Plus we got Montero and Motte, which I'm not even including on that list. There's still holes. LF sucks, LHRP sucks, we could add one more SP before the diminishing returns really kick in. But they did what needed to be done and this is a pretty good baseball team.
  13. They would bring in Ian Stewart for two weeks before they'd bring up Bryant on Opening Day, unless he suddenly signs an extension he has shown no interest in signing.
  14. If CF was a hole then, then 2b is the same hole now.
  15. Because baseball is complicated and people are dumb.
  16. Anything's possible in baseball, but there's a decent-sized gap on paper+
  17. I'd rather have Sweeney, Szczur, and maybe teaching Christian Villanueva to play OF over Lake.
  18. Maybe, just maybe, the defensive metrics are wrong and/or it's an artifact of the parks he played in. Or maybe the Cubs think they've seen a flaw that they can correct in his defense (something about playing too shallow)? But if not, then Coghlan/Fowler has the potential to be *really* bad.
  19. Russell for Strasburg and the Cubs become slight favorites to win the NL Central in 2015.
  20. (nvm, they changed it to 84) http://www.fangraphs.com/depthcharts.aspx?position=Standings If that plays out, Cubs would be @PIT for the Wild Card game. And would score the 2nd most runs in the NL. [expletive] YES! Hell, I just noticed the Cardinals and Pirates are slipping. We're projected just two games out.
  21. i feel like you would've rather they traded russell for fowler just for the sake of trading a prospect away I'm not responsible for your dumb feelings.
  22. It's cloooooose. $15m or whatever? I think he'd pass on that, maybe?
  23. OK. So you're saying they added certainty, didn't lose any ceiling, but we're not sure if it made them better or not. I'm not sure that math adds up.
  24. It's about certainty. The 50% projection may not have moved a ton, but the Cubs have a lot of guys with very different 30% and 70% outcomes. Moving more at bats to a more certain player at a position where there's fewer quality alternatives is a net improvement. Now if Alcantara falls on his face the consequences are far less dire. You can say the same thing about Baez too probably, although he always had more help with LaStella and later Russell(even more reason to move Valbuena's certainty to another position). If your current projection is low-80s in wins, do you really want certainty?
