  1. Getting anything for Castro if they take his contract is fine with me.
  2. I mean, outside of the exuberance of signing a player, there aren't any *great* deals to be had on the open free agent market. Four years for a guy his age is tough to swallow. But I do like this a lot in terms of how it fits with our needs. Whether we want him for 2b or RF, that's taking a highly volatile position with lots of downside for us and putting in a pretty reliable veteran who is going to be a useful player barring something very unforeseen. Unless the Dodgers go on a flurry, we're going to enter ST with the best team in the NL on paper.
  3. Cardinals getting left out of the musical chairs.
  4. Replace the guy who has been known to put up bizarre near-replacement seasons randomly for guy who projects to 3.1 wins and hasn't been below 2 in seven years. Exactly the kind of move we should be making, even if four years and a bunch of money for Zobrist makes me squirm.
  5. So far, we haven't done anything that would take away from future years outside that two year window. A Zobrist contract for four years might a little.
  6. Offseason goal: get as old as possible
  7. I'm sure he's an employee of the club and can pitch anywhere we tell him. If the next pitcher we pick up isn't better than Hammel, then that one can go to the pen. If nobody disagrees, then don't consider it an argument. Just a comment on how I like that quote from Hoyer. Soler's backup is Coghlan. Castro and Bryant's backups would be LaStella. I'm not the biggest LaStella fan, but I think that's still preferable to the depth we have at SP.
  8. The old "having too many good players" non-problem problem. Hammel to bullpen. Problem solved.
  9. I think it's more "what counts as depth." Trevor Cahill as next man up in your rotation isn't depth, it's the problem you're trying to avoid with depth.
  10. https://twitter.com/sahadevsharma/status/674050914802601984/photo/1 Hoyer with a great quote about why we need another starting pitcher and what our focus this offseason is.
  11. I sometimes wonder if the front office isn't floating the occasional fake rumor to Wittenmeyer indirectly to screw with him. His columns are stupid, but he's been a solid reporter in the past and the last two years he's had a mix of getting stuff right and a few things hilariously wrong.
  12. I was prepared to give up Soler for him, so that's a nice howdoyado.
  13. It's a lot more complicated than "Well, the rules say it's OK." I thought this article did a good job of explaining it: https://sports.vice.com/en_us/article/the-kris-bryant-situation-as-explained-by-a-labor-lawyer (emphasis added)
  14. That's an awful lot of protective equipment for a left fielder, but given his propensity for dropping balls it might be prudent.
  15. This thread is getting dumb so I'm just gonna put this here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHtgyo8E-mY
  16. about that... http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/rankings/top-100-prospects/2012/2612998.html #42 and #89 amuse me. Brett Jackson 15 spots ahead of Anthony Rizzo. Javier Baez and Matt Szczur 3 spots apart.
  17. I don't see how we could afford Heyward unless we moved Castro. The highest-end reports had us with $30m to spend, and we've gone through more than 2/3rds of that.
  18. I wonder how much he's getting. I saw $5m-$8m guaranteed attached to his name in some places, which seems nutso to me for a guy who had 17 good innings.
  19. We're possibly the best team in the NL on paper right now. Everything is a "nice to have."
  20. I'm not talking about upgrading them "slightly." Those guys are replacement level as starters. I'm saying we need a sixth pitcher on the Hammel/Hendricks/Lackey tier, so at least 2.0 WAR.
  21. I don't disagree we shouldn't be looking to get a Carassco, Gray, Archer, etc if made available and use Soler or Baez as a main piece. I disagree with thinking its of huge importance to use assets to find a marginal upgrade over Wood, Richard, etc for a 6th starter. You can find those guys closer to ST. Is Hendricks not under control longer than 2017? I guess it depends on what you mean by "huge importance." We've got a 90-win team on paper right now, maybe a bit better. Nothing is of "huge importance." I think there's as much to be gained by upgrading from a replacement-level player in a spot you're 75% likely to use than a ~1.5 WAR player (Baez in CF) in a spot you're definitely going to use.
